Just had the BT engineer round today to test the quality of my line. He informed me I couldn't have ADSL!

He said something about being less than 55 and I was 64 or something. Dunno, just know my Pipex ADSL has gone down the pan.

Does this mean I can never have ADSL?

That's the line loss, and is measured in dB.

Apparently its worth submitting the order again just in case, as with different equipment, different conditions etc. you could still pass if your lucky. If not, get a new line and ask the engineer to run a totally new cable, and not to run it off the old one (plenty of tea and cakes may help!) and try it on that one.

Obviously nothing's guaranteed, but its worth a try.

Hello

Have a wander through the forums here bbs.adslguide.org.uk. If you db was slightly out of range it may be worth applying again, and removing any equipment plugged into extension sockets.

Strange I know, but the DB loss limit varies day by day it would appear.

Steve.

you have to be within 5km of the exchange at the moment, BT are gradually rolling out more updated exchanges.... the new cable isnt likely to make much difference there. Try satellite DSL in about 6 months it will be cheaper (currently £100+ per month) or telewest if they are in your area, far superior (or NTL in other places if they aint gone bust yet )

The distance isnt the problem, if it was the distance they wouldnt even have done the tests.

the 5km rule assumes good line quality too mate. try what the man sed and get a new standard line plumbed in with fresh wires. If the trunk down your main road doesnt have enough cables.. i.e. carried on building an estate after your house, then they may have used a DACs2 (multiplexer) which will severly limit frequencies they can use

Fingers crossed.
