Jase,
might be worth looking into ADSL, if you can get it. Think plus.net are doing a good deal for about 22 quid a month, which is probably what I'll go for.

If you get NTL cable in your area, give them a try.
£5 for 56K or
£25 for 512K, £25 install. Good service. Only been cut off 3 times in the last 6 months (about 1/2 hour each).

I checked out Pipex broadband info yesterday. Their lines can be 'contended' at 'only' 50:1, ie 50 users sharing 512 Kbps - nearly 10x faster than normal... IF only 1 person logged in, LESS THAN 20% of normal 56k modem bandwidth if everybody logged in at same time !!!!
Doesn't look like such a good deal to me!!! - Have I misunderstood the principal??

Mick,
I'm on Pipex ADSL now and trust me it aint slow!
Regularly get massive download speeds of 50/60KBsec and sometimes more. Great for gaming too with rapid pings of like 30.
Doesn't really slow down ever no matter how busy it is.

Mick,
That would only happen if all 50 people were doing massive downloads at the same time. In reality, not all 50 will be logged on, and the majority of the ones who are will be surfing the web and not doing downloads (thereby freeing up bandwidth while they read pages).
I always seem to get full 64K a sec anyway.

From all the indpendent reviews Ive seen PIPEX do well if not top. Although independent from my company they run over our backbone (WorldCom) which has had some huge upgrades recently and is one of the biggest in the world. Cant vouch for their support etc but cant be any worse than NTL or BT LOL!
Lots of people I play CS with say BT ADSL is shocking so if online gaming is your thing then I wouldnt go there.

With 50 people sharing 512kbs (64 kBs) they only need to be averaging downloads at 1.28 kBs with a normal telphone line modem 56kbs you could max out at 7kBs (best I have seen is 5.6 sustained with AOL)
My point is that even with only 10 of the 50 downloading they will be limited to max 6.4 kBs which is less than a 'narrowband modem'. Current ADSL user lines are probably not up to full subscription levels yet. Anyone seen anywhere near 64 kBs sustained ? - but I imagine once the marketing gets going we will start seeing problems like in the early days of 'free' ISPs where there was not sufficient capacity. - I am willing to be convinced though
