Question

Chaps,

After having setup a Cable Modem based (UTP) Router with a built in Wireless Access Point, a few of my friends are now very keen on doing this themselves. The thing is that they have ADSL and all have the USB modem. None of them want to upgrade to the more expensive Router package so are looking for a Wireless Router that will share a USB ADSL modem connection.

It seems like the new (soon to be released) Orinoco BG2000 *may* do the job but it's hard to find out if they will work with a USB ADSL Modem. Most of them just state ADSL.

Anyone got any knowledge/recommendations on this front - there must be people out there who have already done this?

Cheers,

Matt.

All you need is a DSL modem that will acept an RJ11 connection for its WAN interface, and also supports PPPOE authentication.

I have seen one or two out there, let me see if i can find some info.

Question

Ian,

How does that link in with a BT ADSL USB Modem? Don't you need an ADSL, USB equiv of what I've got (like the one you were thinking about buying)???

it would replace the Alcatel fish thing.

and you would plug the DSL line directly into it.

Cheers Lee. Presumably this will work with the USB ADSL Modems? And also, I presume you rate it and the Wireless range is decent?

Ta,

Matt

P.S. To quantify "decent", I've got the SMC7004AWBR with SMC Wireless card, live in a 2 bed 1890's Terrace, live at number 6 and I get 11Mbits all the way to number 14 That means I've got full 11Mbit throughout the house and garden...

Matt,

This replaces the USB modem, you plug the RJ11 cable directly into it.

the green Alcatel thing is then redundant.
