Need to pick your brains - This has got me stumped.
I've got an old 266MHz G3 (with Zip)that I'm upgrading. Here's my problem -
Trying to install a 2nd ATA hd, but I now can't access the CD!!
Wiring -
Original 4Gig HD - set to MASTER & plugged into the first port
Additional HD - set to master & plugged into second port (on M/board)
CD Rom - set to slave and attached to the 2nd HD loom after the 2nd HD.
Zip - SCSI buss (no driver as yet - haven't copied it over)
I'm getting the 2 seperate HDs, but no CD....
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Have you tried setting the new drive as slave on the primary bus ?
Not sure that it will make any difference but most of the Macs I've seen are done like that.

I tried adding a second hard drive to my old G3 and I wasn't able as you cannot set master and slave drives on the very early ones (you can tell by looking at the chip on the motherboard). IIRC if you run OSX you can set master and slaves...
This link might help...

Found this in an article on here... http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/g3.shtml
'Early beige G3s could not support slave drives, as these machines (generally) utilized Rev. 1 motherboards and Rev. A ROMs. Late beige G3s with Rev. 2 motherboards and Rev. B ROMs do support slave drives. Although the inability to support slaves under the classic Mac OS is inherent in the Rev. A ROM, OS X has a mechanism for supplementing the beige ROM code and allowing the use of slave drives.'

and found this...
The IDE Slave Support Issue: Although I didn't use this drive as a slave due to cable fit issues, I've gotten a lot of mail asking if owners of early G3's can add slave drives in their system. As noted many months ago at the G3-ZONE (dedicated to apple G3 systems since Feb of 98), there is an easy way to tell if you have a G3 Rev 2 or later (rev 1's do not support IDE Slave drives). Look at the ATI graphics chip on the motherboard:
* If it says "ATI RageII+..." you have a Rev 1 (no Slaves)
* If it says "ATI RagePro..." you have a Rev 2 (or later)

MacOSX Available from Mac Warehouse, drop AllanB a line, he's your man for Mac discounts.
I am sure I have simply added another internal disk in the beige G3. The only thing to remember is that the disk will more than likely be set to SCSI 0, you need to change the jumper on the side of the disk, can't remember what to change it to though
IIRC the IDE disks came with the iMacs but the beige G3s are still SCSI...
Could be completely wrong though..... Marcus maybe....

Performa/LC 630 was first mac with IDE drive, which came out, oooo, long time ago.
Beige G3's and all later macs are deffo IDE for Hard Drives, and I think CD ROM as well, though not sure.
As for Max OS X, well, have a chat to AllanB, as said, the man for the mac stuff. Or become a Premier Apple Developer and you get all the latest OS versions for 'free' though it does cost a packet to join!
As for going to OS X, I would check that all your apps will run nativley under it, or that they have carbon versions. If not then you'll need to run Classic as well, and you're talking about needing a tad more memory. Plus the old G3 will be rather slow under X. Trust me, I've run OS X and OS X Server on a Beige G3 with 128mb RAM and quick it is not.
If you're after a slave drive to expand capacity then why not just get a bigger master drive? ok, you'd have to get the data from the existing master onto the new one, but it would save you having to go to OS X.
As you might guess, I'm not a big fan of OS X, yes I occasionally run it and our products are being developed for X, but at present, for what I do, I don't need OS X.

Scrappy is correct. The earlier macs won't allow more than 2 IDE devices where as the revved ones will . You can also tell what rev is is by the sound out ports. I can't remember which way round it is but on one the were arranged vertically on the other were side by side.
OSX on you machine might be a bit painful. You need stack of RAM and a beefy machine to get the most from it and then you need to get used to the interface. I've gone back to OS 9.2
I'm out on site at the Telegraph tomorrow but will check on Friday for you.

Yeh - I need the second HD for Audio applications. Used to run a 2gig Jaz drive (uurggghhh!!!!) for all audio storage, but v unreliable.
Yep - the CD & HDs are IDE - but i didn't know about the 2 IDE things from Rev1. hmmm. I don't really want to go over to OSX - I've got 9.2.2 at the moment. Quite happy with that.
How much is a later version ROM?
Thanks chaps,
Dan

Sorry not been able to look into this yet and I'm in training on Monday so it wil be Tuesday. As far as I know you cannot upgrade the HDD controller without changing the logic board which not economically viable. Might be best to go down the SCSI Hdd or external route.
Just thought I think Atto might do an IDE slave controller. I'll check it out.
