ok, there's lots and lots of so call "speed up your PC" or "optimise PC performance" software out there. do they work? and which one is the tried and tested?

Basically, they tell you how to tidy up your machine or do it for you. I've not seen one that's a wizard fix it all solution.

do a clean reinstall and make sure you have 4gb ram in the box

It's all rubbish.

Download and use ccleaner, uninstall Norton/McAfee and use Microsoft Security Essentials and defrag your hard drive.

If that don't work then as Chef said, use your system restore disc.

CC cleaner is a great utility. I use it in conjunction with revo uninstaller - it's free and is a life saver, basically enables you to uninstall programs you don't need or use, and it also looks for things left over from being previously uninstalled.

The best way to speed up your system is to ignore all the tune up software & get an extra couple of gig of RAM instead.

You have to be very careful with these so called,"Optimisers, cleaners, tuners" etc. They claim to speed up your pc by removing unecessary files and such but in fact they tend to do the opposite most of the time.

The best way to keep your PC slim and trim is to ensure that you uninstall programs properly. This means cleaning out the registry and any temporary files the program may have left. If you can do this manually then great, otherwise you can use a program called Uninstaller Pro. I used to use all the old reg cleaners but found enumerate problems with them until I found this fantastic piece of software.

With this software you will first call up the program's own uninstaller interface. Uninstaller Pro will then find all the other files associated with the program and delete them, totally wiping the program from your PC's existence.

Just in case this looks like a plug. No I don't work for the software manufacturer, just wanted to share a good piece of software with you folk.

totally agree with Zayd- revo uninstaller worked for me in the same manner. I just liked ccleaner for it's ease of use for fixing broken links, and deleting history and cache etc..
