Red face Windows 7

I've spent most of the day trying to set up a new laptop running Windows 7. And it's been a bloody nightmare

For starters it doesn't seem compatible with Outllok Express 6 so I have had to use Windows Live Mail which is absolutely dreadful.

Is there another decent e-mail programme which is compatible please?

And it won't work with my old Office 03?

And that's just for starters!!

Any comments??

David

Cool

Another vote for Thunderbird here

It's so much like Outlook Express it's enbarrassing! Did they pinch the source?

Thumbs up

Thanks guys (and the young lady ) - that's very helpful. Very pleased to hear that my old Office should work as I know my way around that. Will investigate Thunderbird.

I have 7 e-mail accounts (used by family) and at present if I get a mail it ends up in each folder so I have 7 copies of the same mail. Not ideal

Anyway my suicidal despair has lessened slightly

Thanks again, cheers David

Geezer
lovl.

I think the *last* thing they wanted was the source for that piece of bug-ridden piece of crap!

But Thunderbird does *look* like OE - making it easy for non-tech users to adapt.

I can't understand anyone that thinks Live Mail is crap.... it is just different. I must admit I was not impressed when OE had gone, but I soon got used to Live Mail and it works absolutely fine and I actually prefer it now to OE.

David,
I have 5 email accounts and Live Mail works fine.... infact I think it works better with mulitple accounts and is easier to set-up than OE was. I just imported all my OE email accounts and it did what it should from the off.

As for Office, insert the disc.

Open My computer and right click the Office disc, select it to run under the compatibility wizard, it will install it and once installed - run it as if you have either Vista, XP or if you want a blast from the past Win 98

The Compatibility Wizard is the best yet that is built in to Windows.

So can you just open Office '03 files with Office '07 or do they have to go through a conversion process?

Office '03 seems to do all I need, just routine stuff and Excel. So what extra goodies would I get from Office '07?

What e-mail programme do you use which is compatible with Win 7? Despite positive comments above I cannot get on with Windows Live Mail.

Thanks, David

There is never any need for a backward conversion i.e. opening 2003 files in 2007.

Outlook is fine with Windows 7.

Yes you can open and save files in the old format. Office 2007 has a new front end which takes a bit of getting used to but when you do IMHO its much better. The new version has new file types eg docx and xlsx (which offer better compression so smaller files) instead of doc and xls, but as mentioned you can save and load whatever format you want....

You can also convert the files back manually by simply removing the "x" part of the extension from the file names.

Yes you'll have full compatability from 2003 to 200
What extra goodies?

Not much for an individual really - you'll just end up with a load of grief trying to find stuff as it looks pretty different.

Microsoft are going through one of their design phases again.

We've been there before with their probably largest ERP solution.

I hate Office 2007, much prefer the easier to find things on 2003 version.
I'm running the free 2010 office beta at the moment. Not much of an improvement on 2007 as far as I'm concerned (I only use excel and word though)

Thanks guys. I am still confused about Outlook and Windows 7. Most of google says they don't go together.

Using Live Mail I get a copy of any new messages sent to every e-mail account I have and the list of mail in a particular account will only go back 2 days. OK, perhaps I have the wrong set-up but I am buggered if I can get it right.

Why not set up a user profile for each user i.e they log on as themselves. Then configure each users email client accordingly. That way each user only sees their own mail and files.

Office 2003 works fine with windows 7. I had about 60 or so clients on that very combination without issue.

David

I've been using Outlook (2003 and 2007) and Windows 7 for over a year - trust me it works just fine.

Do people still use Outlook? It seems a very old fashioned way of working in this day and age.

What does it do that google apps can't do? am I missing something?

OK - so tell me my options for an easy-to-use e-mail programme that will run under Windows 7. It would need to be one that will allow me to import/transfer my OE folders into the programme.

i'm a business user but moved over to google apps ages ago, we did use outlook but it was slow and clunky with the amount of email we received. We also tried thunderbird but it just was not powerful enough.

Unless you use imap (which never seems to work well) how do you keep track of emails that you have sent on different computers?

google apps gives you:

Confirmed email address system (gives you a logo in the subject in the email to show the sender is not spoofed for stuff like ebay and paypal), almost unlimited storage space, instant searching, no spam! (we were drowning in spam in outlook), access from any PC in the world, work offline, view all your drafts, sent mail etc, no waiting for email to download, access from any computer and stacks more features!

It must of increased our productivity 10 fold.

move-----------> to the future!

Thunderbird is perfectfor those coming from OE (will import you mail etc) and also for use with google apps IMAP e-mail. Works perfectly fo rme on Mac and Windows. I use Mail on the iPhone and can use Google Apps on the web if required so I have access to my mail at all times.

A combination of Thunderbird and Google Apps is the future.

Miscrosoft Exchange server handles all mail.

I connect when in the office using local outlook client and pick and choose what I want to keep only on my laptop .pst file
Then the choice is via blackberry and remotely connect to the exchange server via Web Outlook
