Default Getting rid of security malware program

I've ended up with another of those self-installing security programs (Security Tools I think), which gives you a fake scan.
anyway, last time it happened I found a free malware remover which worked fine.
This time, logged on to my own profile, I can't run anything other than Explorer - not even task manager - as it blocks it as a potential threat. This means I can't follow the removal instruction on the net for this program to get rid of it.

My wife's profile still works, but I can't access my email from there, amongst other things, and it would worry me the the program was still active.
I ran a scanner I downloaded, which didn't find anything, but I could only run it from my wife's profile - I don't know if it would scan my profile files from there.

Never got round to renewing my subscription to Trend, which I suppose is why this managed to get on. Lesson learnt!

I used Malwarebytes.org to get rid of the very same malware last night on somone's laptop - ran it from safe mode as it prevents you from starting any software in normal mode. You can always run it again from normal mode afterwards to be on the safe side.

I tried running in safe mosd,e but it needed a Java update, which it couldn't do. It may have done that now, so I'll try it again

My son's computer got this a couple of days ago, but he said he hadn't downloaded anything. Any idea how he caught this virus?

I hadn't knowingly downloaded anything on the day it happened, though Vista pops up so many warning I tend to just accept them.

The infected laptop I was handed was full of file sharing software and dodgy looking cookies, so I expect they got it from looking at dubious sites.
