Hard Disk Recovery software
Hi Guys,
I have just lost 500GB of data that was on my server and am trying to recover it. The server was running some kind of Linux dist, but not sure what.
Server is a Qnap TS209.
Anyhow, server config files went corrupt after an improper shutdown, and when I restarted the server, it tried to format the drive, which it did partially, as the MBR etc, is no longer there.
I have connected the HDD to my PC via a USB external drive bay, and can see that there is data on the HDD, but cannot recover it with the 2 programs that I have used (EXT2FSD) and Restorer Ultimate (which cost me £30 as a download )
Any other ideas how to retrive this data, as this is the home videos and photographs of the kids for the past 8 years
Thanks for your help
Andy

I have used OnTrack to recover files and it worked quite well.
File Recovery Software - File Repair - Easy Recovery - Ontrack Data Recovery

If you still can't get the data off with the software above, i've used Data Recovery & Computer Forensics Services - Kroll Ontrack - Electronic Discovery, Hard Drive Recovery, Data Deletion with success

The TS-209 is, as you say, a linux distro. Therefore the disk will be formatted in EXT.
The disk was probably borked anyway - you mention the config files were corrupt; these files are stored on the installed disks, so if it had been lost then it sounds like the disk was potentially screwed anyway.
Was the disk a single disk or was there also another?
You have 4 choices:
1. Standalone disks
2. RAID 0 (mirrored)
3. RAID 1 (striped)
4. JBOD
I very much doubt that standard disk recovery software will work, especially if the newer disk format has removed any file allocation tables / records
Might be a case of having to scan for file signatures.

Hi,
It was RAID 1, but when the system started to re-install itself, I took out the 1st HDD, and re-booted the system, (thinking I would be able to save any data on the 1st HDD).
Consequently, the system started to re-install itself onto disk 2, so now I have both disks with part installs.
Thanks for the advice of the software, I have tried the fist 3 suggestions, but alas they didn't work.
I will try BlkKnight suggestion next

have a look for e2salvage - I have used this in the past to recover data in EXT2 files systems.
I would create a forensic clone of the disk and work on the clone - it will prevent your data becoming further destroyed, unless of course the drive electronics are toast.
e2retrieve would be worth a look too.
