I highly recommend Avast and you gt the pro version free for 60 days then register your email address with them and it changes to the free home version that is just as effective just a few config things removed. They send no spam at all and dont pass the email address on. Its picked up loads of infections that things like AVG missed in the client machines i installed it on
THe infections were not on my machines but on peoples machines that get brought to me when things have gone wrong for them lol

The Search engine is your friend
NOD32 (Antivirus and Antispyware Software - Download ESET NOD32 Antivirus or ESET Smart Security and eliminate viruses)
Kaspersky (Kaspersky Lab: Antivirus software)
I went with Avast (avast! - Download antivirus software for spyware and virus protection)
I used to use AVG but imo that sucks

Much better, uses fewer resources and cheaper (£29 for antivirus, or £39 for additional firewall, antispam etc).

Kaspersky won one of the best awards for AV software, they did the 3 licence one at PC world for 25 quid (the full internet security suite, firewall etc etc) or its about 11 quid from scan Internet Security v8.0 1y 1u *Single Oem - Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 (v8) UK Edition 1 Year - 1 User - *OEM Edition - Scan.co.uk
£2 more for the 3 licence edition!

It's certainly much better than the free ones . I've seen it miss a few things, but not much. That does seem a very cheap price (it's £40 from the Kapersky web site). I notice it's an oem version, so you may have to buy something else to qualify for the cheap software (it's only supposed to be sold with certain hardware)/

I'm not with Barclays so couldn't get the free copy, but I got a 3 user Kaspersky copy from Scan for £10.34 as it was on the Today Only offers. Just over £3 a year per PC, can't say fairer than that

Just replaced my crappy Norton (still had 2 and a half years left on it!) with Nod 32 last night. £30 ish. Recommended by peeps on here after posting the same question as you. Kaspersky was mentioned a lot too, a few said AVG. £30 for decent virus protection which doesn't use much memory is a bargain in my eyes.

I'm a Kaspersky fan, but NOD32 and Avast! seem to get good reviews, as does Avira. I've had too many bad experiences with McCrappy and Norton over the last blah years to touch them with a barge pole.

Thing is Mcaffe and Norton are often the packages (trial I might add) supplied with PC's so many people don't know any different and just accept them by default!
There really are so much better packages out there, though
