Windows XP 64-bit should run any 32-bit software without any problems.

Unless there is a specific reason you are running xp-64, I'd strongly advise to go to xp-32 or vista-64.

XP-64 is a painful OS

From experience I can second that opinion.

(run Vista-x64 now)

On a 64-bit installation there is a folder called Program Files (x86) so 32-bit apps should install okay

mmm any program that tries to write to the OS kernel will cause a blue screen (this is mainly badly written programs and some anti virus and backup programs)

its a much more secure OS -- but the downside is always going to be useability

if it BSOD's when you install a 32bit app, i'd say that was a bit of a problem. . . .

Vista64 all the way.
