ITV SPORT - mpeg encoding bloody awful!
Anyone noticed whenever you watch the football on ITV , it's picture quality is terrible compared to the BBC or SKY ?
It's really blocky around the moving parts - reminiscent of "jaggies" when viewing poorly encoded video
It's not that noticeable on smaller sets, but watching it on a large screen, it really becomes apparent.

Is that on Freeview or Sky?
My Sky picture is shocking when you get close to the screen, it's fine when you sit a distance away though. The picture is a little better if I use the Freeview box instead.

ITV is the worse carrier due to sharing alot more channels in there mux's
a little more info, BBC have less viewing channels and use a better compression downside is less channels on the carrier.
ITV use worse Compression but get to put more channels on the carrier.
Terrestrial - Digital Spy
If you look on the list setanta is on low compression and share alot of channels on there carrier which is why there pictures are **** too.

ITV is bloody awful. Although yesterday was the best I've seen from them in a long while.
Mind you, most people go out and buy a 42" + LCD for crappy SD content anyway.....so they'll be used to a crappy picture.
the BBC are much better though.

Its been like this since digital TV became mainstream IMO, analogue used to give a better quality image (when there was a good signal).
Although analogue these days seems to be not as good as it used to be, probably because they deride the signal via the same digital source.

Football is probabaly the main sport where it is the most noticeable.
In addition:
Anyone notice the intermittant lack of dolby pro-logic surround as well? (i.e the noise of crowed through the rear speakers). Some matches have it, others don't, I usually put this down to the variation in the ground facilities, but when you see microphones littered round the pitch, it make me wonder.
Not to forget them getting the visable screen area wrong for widescreen TVs and chopping off the time/scores (not so bad with our TV as I can shift the screen areas up and down, but I shouldn't need to do it at all).
