Draytek routers
Im really fighting the urge to splurge as im headed to sky bb in a matter of days, are they really as good as people make them out to be?
Im tired of second rate router, though my netgear has held up nicely it's time for a nice upgrade.

It depends whether you will use all the features or not. I have a Draytek Vigor 2820vn (VoIP and Wireless) and it is very stable.
Having said that, I had a D-Link 834 and that was pretty good as well (and relatively cheap!), just didn't have the VoIP ports or the control over traffic shaping that the Vigor has.

I think wireless has been improved to the point that most manufacturer can produce a fairly stable product. Draytek scored as they were stable from the onset of wireless.
I use a netgear DG834 and it's never missed a beat in 3 years or more.
As Steve says, Draytek boxes have some nice extras on them eg. the ability to setup a VPN connection to it, etc... I did this last week and it was a doddle. Just used the windows VPN client too. No problems whatsoever.

Well thing is i've done an obscene amount of reading, of all routers i've looked at draytek was the only one that came up trumps consistently not to mention i want the extra features, plus i can buy a payg 3g dongle incase the net dies on me.
Belkins lock up or disconnect, d-link overheat, netgears can be flaky on wireless depending on the model and need to be the 834v4 to be good with adsl 2+ and they dislike too many connections and freeze up for it.
Bugger it im gonna grab me a 2820n, i've already sussed how to rip out the password/username from the router anyway, the bonus to the draytek is it's easy to change the dns making it look like a sky router is connected so long as they don't look too deep.

Hux, think I've got a Draytek you can have on the cheap if you're interested.
Came from a customer who no longer needs it. Sat in a box in the loft. I know it's wireless, but let me go and check what model it is.

Currently own the older 2800VG model, and again can testify that it's a good stable router with a lot of features and hasn't let me down, except for the PSU went all of a sudden, but fixed that with one of those universal jobbies from Argos.

Ive got a Draytek as well, for medium sized business/home use you wont get better. The only downside in front loading cabling, but like you say, it can be used as a 3G modem, has duel VOIP amongst all its other high quality features, its unbeatable.

Great knowing they're held in high regard.
