HELP !!! Router / Win 2k Server
#1
Hi,
I have a server running win 2k server and this is setup using active directory. It has two NIC's - one for the internal LAN and another for a connection from router (RP114) to it.
Internal LAN NIC is setup with static IP and uses DHCP to issue addresses to client machines. NIC card attached to router is set to use DHCP. Router is setup to give out address in a different pool to the server and other pc's connected to router.
Problem : THe server periodically loses connection to the router despite being given an IP by it. If I take a machine out of the LAN switch and plug it into the router it ping's router fine whereas server cannot ping.
Server uses ICS to share connection coming from Cable Modem to internal LAN.
It's driving me mad !!!
HELP !!!!
ICS is used so that the client machines on the internal LAN can access the internet thru the router ( and in turn the Cable modem).
If I plug in the LAN swich to an output from the router - problem is rpeated : Server may lose connection and other machines can still ping router etc. It requires a fair deal of enabling and disabling NIC cards and restarting of the server !!

Hi Nutter
Very confused here!
Why are you doubling up on sharing the Internet connection?. The RP114 is perfectly capable on sharing your Internet connection to your LAN. Therefore the win server doesn't require to run ICS. sounds like its causing you more problems than its worth!
The server is definitely the problem here. Have you tried dropping the speed connection between the server and router - 10Mbits Half-duplex is adequate let alone 100Mbits
Also, have you tired replacing the NIC card on the server?

-Everything should hang off your SWITCH.
-Gateways should be set to routers IP
-Server should be set as primary DNS, with forwarding to secondary DNS server (web based)
-Server doesn't need second NIC
-Server should be set as DHCP server
-Clients set to obtain IP automatically

I'm impressed !

The DHCP scope should have the default gateway as the internal interface of the router as well.
