Default Access the internet but not via IE?

Chaps

Friend of mine called last night with this issue.

PC was working fine then he had blue screen of death a few times, along with problems with his speed touch modem. He's not fully PC literate so I'm having to assume a few things...

I talked him through updating the drivers to the latest, which were quite out of date. Anyhow, last night we did this and it seemed to work.

I went to command.com and I could ping any website so I know he was online. Yet when we ran IE (and checked IE was not working offline) it continually outlined 'cannot display this webpage'.

No matter what I changed in Options, we could not get any pages to display, yet I know from the pings that he was online and the modem had all the right lights on.

What would be causing IE (ver 7) to do this and is there a suggested solution to bring him back onto the www?

Thanks

Andy

First thing, add/remove programs and remove IE7.0
Reboot and he should be back to IE 6

See if he is online

If not, then bring a copy of firefox etc on a USB stick and see if they work once installed.

What AV/firewall stuff is he running ?

there is a virus doing the rounds at the moment, think it originates from facebook. It gives the exact same problem, internet is connected but the browser wont access any page.

Swiss - cheers chap. Would just be Windows Firewall but he mentioned something about some Norton software that I did not install so maybe he has. Thus it could be stronger than Windows Firewall...

Will try the deletion and reinstall...
