Access the internet but not via IE?
Chaps
Friend of mine called last night with this issue.
PC was working fine then he had blue screen of death a few times, along with problems with his speed touch modem. He's not fully PC literate so I'm having to assume a few things...
I talked him through updating the drivers to the latest, which were quite out of date. Anyhow, last night we did this and it seemed to work.
I went to command.com and I could ping any website so I know he was online. Yet when we ran IE (and checked IE was not working offline) it continually outlined 'cannot display this webpage'.
No matter what I changed in Options, we could not get any pages to display, yet I know from the pings that he was online and the modem had all the right lights on.
What would be causing IE (ver 7) to do this and is there a suggested solution to bring him back onto the www?
Thanks
Andy

there is a virus doing the rounds at the moment, think it originates from facebook. It gives the exact same problem, internet is connected but the browser wont access any page.

Check for the proxy being set. I just set this with a computer to specifically disable IE from accessing the old interweb. It comes up with the error you describe - and the *owner* knows so little about it that they won't be able to find out what the problem is. But I can easily fix it in seconds ...
