Question

I was going to post a few questions about how to link 2PCs in my office but most of the questions have just been answered in another thread. I gather I need a network card in both machines and a cable running between the 2 are these what are also referred to as Ethernet cards?. Also what if one of the machines wasa laptop, would I then need a PCMI Ethernet card?

When you install the cards and connect the 2 does windows take care of everything automaticly or is there a bit of configuration to do.

Finally where is a good place to obtain the kit apart from PC world Etc

Cheers

For just 2 PCs you need an Ethernet network card in each and "Cross Over" (Sometimes X-over) Cat 5 cable. This is diff to standard "straight through" cables which you would use with a Hub.

One each ensure they have unique computer names and the workgroup is set the same.

You will also need to set the "IP Address" on each within the netwrok settings

192.168.1.1 on the 1st and 192.168.1.2 on the second. In both cases the mask should be "255.255.255.0". Everything else can be left to Windows.

If you want to share your internet connection there is more setting up to do. use www.google.com to search and you should be able to find several detailed articles on all of this.

Cheers for that Deano, I'm OK with all that up till the bit about the network setting. Where abouts in Windows do you change these.

I'm pretty crap at describing how to get to the settings 'cos I always miss something out but this site here looks like it has a fairly good walk through of the settings complete with screenshots.

Theres also soem more general background into installing network cards etc.
