here's a trial for you - the software does all of the recovery work for you. You can always buy if you get the results you needed...

Data recovery freeware and trial software by Ontrack Data Recovery - recovery software evaluation, recovery shareware, file recovery software

I have a custom BartPE CD that should allow you to recover the data without too much of a problem (provided the HDD is in some kind of state to recover).

PM me your details and I will send the CD including instructions.

I think the mechanism (reading arm thingy) is broken. I stupidly opened it and it just ticks away. The discs spin and the reading arm just flicks backwards and forwards!

If you have opened it, chances are you will never be able to recover the data from it. They should only be opened in a true clean environment. Dust can destroy the platters.

once I had taken it apart to have a look to see if I could fix it I then read that you are not supposed to. Apparently you still might be able to recover it

The only thing you could try yourself is to get an identical drive and swap the platters over. I did this with an old Xbox belonging to a friend and whilst it booted, the drive fell over again very quickly.

I am not sure you would be able to recover the data though without getting it done professionally, which costs a small fortune.
