Question Anybody tried one of these Netgear SC101 (NAS)?

I bought one on the off-chance that it would be a cheap NAS for my Macs.....

Sadly, Netgear don't seem to have got any OSx-native drivers for it yet

Unless anybody on here knows different....

It will work quite happily with the PCs, and as a work-around, I can have it "shared" on a PC, but it's a bit of a ball-ache....

Any suggestions?

Dan

So....

it's a bit slow?

Can't complain, it only cost £70 - will donate it to the IT lot

Anyhoo - I've got 1TB of drives now that need a home - perhaps an alternative NAS housing?

Any suggestions?

I suppose if it works for you, use it on windows.

Not really up-to-date on NAS as I've built a computer to fileserve.

However, last time I was looking, I was recommened these...

Synology Inc. :: Products :: Disk Station DS207

There is alos the cubestation which takes 4 drives I think. Might be over-kill for what you want though.

Well, the purpose is for backing up Macs really - wanted to use the existing network. I thought the Netgear would be a cheap & cheerful option, so I'm not too bothered if it doesn't work very well. I'll fob it off onto somebody else!!

Will have a look at those options

Cheers,

Dan

Apple time capsules seem to be delivering on their promise. I'm picking one up when I see one.

Avoid at all costs - rubbish. We rescued the poor hard disk from ours and put it into an external USB enclosure instead.

We have on loan at the moment an Acer Easy Store NAS box, works with PC's or MAC's

Acer currently have a buy 2 get 1 free offer, so you can have 3 TB's of raided NAS on 3 units for 700 quid (ish)

How you getting on with them Sonic? "Proper" UNC based mapping?

I've setup a Buffalo TeraStation 1TB and that seemed quite good with AD integration.

LOL.. my sister has just bought one and I was thinking about one until I realised it didnt have samba / NFS or even let you configure a static IP address!!

Sack of ****.. Scan do something that looks similar but looks better for less than 100 quid!

Seems to be ok, ive left it with one of the internal guys, he is going to put one of our large databases on it

It has a small linux kernel and 128Mb ram, the only downside is that it is only 100Mb NIC

AD Integegration seems the same as other units, specify your AD DC, and it imports the users in and you need to keep them in sync every once in a while

Yes it uses proper UNC based mapping

I think we are going to buy this ex demo unit, plus another one so we can get one free

This is the unit

Acer - United Kingdom - Products

They also do an Aspire Easy Store which looks like it has wireless built in, so more designed for home use
