Default 360 HD-DVD Drive, worth buying?

Im REALLY tempted to buy one today!

Looking on play.com the amount of available movies are putting me off a little, I currently use an upscaling Samsung HDMI dvd player, am i going to see a BIG difference in picture quality?

I've had one for a while but still only have 2 HD DVD's. Its good, but I'd honestly hold off for a while yet until there are more releases . . . like Hot Fuzz in July

Quality wise the picture and sound are a big improvement IMO, plus the whole menu/extras thing is far more slick than on DVD's. I bought Smokin' Aces which has DVD one side and HD DVD the other, the difference hits you when you put the DVD side on by accident! The shootout scene is fantastic in HD.

Dont' bother blu-ray is going to win...

BR exclusives coming soon include the Pirates Of The Carribean & Spiderman trilogies.

If you really want one - there's usually a few on ebay for about £80.

I have a feeling you may be right there. Blockbuster in the USA announced today that they are renting blu-ray discs in preference to hd-dvd...

Surely the way forward is a machine that plays both = LG BH100 DVD player , Not quite perfect as it lacks HDMI 1.3 and it's very expensive , But it wont be long before we have a player that will play anything thats thrown at it , be region free and sub £500.

I wouldnt be suprised to Sony come out with some new anti-piracy gubbins that just so happens to detect universal players as a problem.

I think at this moment in time, if you must have King Kong in HD DVD then go for the add-on, otherwise record it off sky HD & wait for a blu-ray player you like the look of.

I've had one for a while now.... HD for £100 can't be argued at if you already have a 360. The current HD DVD releases are not huge but more are coming and some out now are pretty good (Matrix, Smokin Aces, M-I etc). I'm taking the view that this will get me by until the multiformat standalone players are reasonable money. But then again blu-ray will need to get it's act in gear too with regards titles because at the moment the only one i'd buy is Casino Royale.

Tony.

I've seen several reviews that say it's not great (i.e. there are standalone players that are much better). Still be better than dvd though

Sony's standalone players are due to hit the UK very soon and by all accounts they're something special.

Not seen a PS3 in action but a mate said watching Casino Royale in 1080p was jaw-dropping, especially the opening titles where he was looking closely at the screen and wasnt able to make out individual pixels.

Seen a hd addon on ebay today for a buy it now of £75 and I still wasnt tempted to get one.

Apparently it does a very good job of up-scaling SD DVDs, but still no multi region

They added that in the last firmware update I think (I know the original console didn't upscale). Even wih the upscale, I've read in several places that the standalone players do a better job. Having said that, I suspect you need to be a hifi nut with a huge screen to see the difference
