PC runs very very slow - posibly codec ?
The pc runs normal speed, but when I click on a file like TG.avi then the pc runs super slow.
The pc is running Window XP, has just had a new graphics card installed.
PC only has 6.8 gb of free space on C:/
Is there a good way to check system performance ?
What should I look at, RAM performance ?
Is this codec thing causing a conflict ?
It's suppossed to be freeware to play TopGear .avi files, but was working ok a week ago.
Any suggestions would be useful....
Ta.

yeah, we use lavasoft/adaware so maybe that has pulled something out of the codec file ?
removing the spyware component, would that cause codec to fail ?
I'll also check the graphics card drivers, but these come with the card ?

using the windows task manager when opening the .avi file.....
it shows that cpu usage goes up to 100% and stays there.
Have done a virus check with zero viruses detected.
How do you check the graphics card drivers..
a) what's being used by the system ?
b) what is the latest available ?

I found this on a tweak site...
Windows seems to have a REALLY big problem when it comes to reading AVI files from explorer. It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it'll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width, height, etc. of the AVI file (this is displayed in the Properties window). Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage.
To solve this problem all you have to do is the following:
1. Open up regedit
2. Goto: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"
This will no longer provide you with the windows properties displaying the AVI file information such as width, height, bitrate etc.
NOTE: Please use caution when using regedit as you could screw your machine.... This isn't my suggestion, so don't hunt me down if you do bugger it up... Backup your registry first etc etc..
