I've got a couple of Freecom external drives. They're pretty quick, very reliable, take a few knocks, and run off the usb2 power (no external power needed). Recommended.

It's pretty much only the 2.5 drives that will run off USB, take a look at Buffalo Ministation or Fujitsu Handydrive. Some great prices around for 100GB.
I've got a couple of drives I've just bought the drive and the enclosure seperate and I'm toying with the idea of the Icybox leather one with built in cable.
Western Digital look great but have had some really crap consumer reviews.
Good luck, let us know what you go for.

Freecom also do a media player which is basically a hard-drive that will connect directly to a stereo system or TV as well as a PC via USB i have had mine for a year and its pretty good

I put a spare laptop drive into a cheap enclosure, bit of a pain as USB alone can't power it up, I have to plug in another USB power lead to spin the drive up, then can unplug the power.

PC World has a bargain at the moment 320GB Seagate drive for £79.99
SEAGATE ST3320620U2-RK External Hard Drives at PC World - Shop for a cheap External Hard Drive including the SEAGATE ST3320620U2-RK.
You can even walk in to a store anf pick it up. I've bought one recently and it works well and runs cool (both the drive and power adapter).
Edit: Sorry, didn't read your post fully. Just realised this would be no good if you want a USB powered drive.
