Laptop can't see my wireless network, any ideas?
I've just switched my laptop on but it can't see my wireless network although it can find others in range. I'm sitting about a foot from my wireless router
It was fine last time I used it about a week to two weeks ago. I've not knowingly changed anything and the PC wired internet connection through the wireless router is working fine.
Where should I start looking for a solution? Non techy answers please, I'm a numptie

Done that on both the lappy and router but no luck. The laptop can see other networks but not my own. I'm in the router now having a look but don't really know what any of it means
It's worked fine for over a year and a half so I can't understand why it suddenly won't work. Can the wireless bit just stop working?

The lappy can't even see my wireless network when I click on 'view available networks' but it can see my neighbours.
Aerial is tight and wireless is enabled
I really need to get on my network with the lappy as I'm going away in a day and need to update some stuff online

On your router settings make sure the router is broadcasting SSID, because if its not, no wireless devises will be able to see the wireless network.
On nearly all routers there is this option.
Hop it helps.

My sister married a copper, what use is that?
I'll check the SSID setting, if that's ok I think I'll start looking for a geek, I suppose this forum is as good a place to look as any

I don't know how it works in Windows, but isn't there an option for you to enter the SSID/passcode manually from your wireless connection manager thingy, and see if it can connect that way? Otherwise it'd be impossible to join closed (non SSID broadcast) networks if you can only choose one it can 'see'.

We had this problem ages ago, solved it using a piece of software called netstumbler, to find out which channels all the other networks in the area are on. And then moved mine so it was 6 channels away from them; they had all left theirs on the default by the look of it.
I made sure all the settings are correct between router and laptop SSID`s, Mac codes, IP`s etc.
The only problem you might have is if it`s an intel pro wireless card built into centrino, it doesn`t seem to have the ption to use the european channel spacings. So if you are using channels 12 + 13 on the european settings on your router. the laptop won`t pick the network up at all. In that case the highest channel you can use is 11.
Also my netear router has the option to isolate it from talking to the other wireless routers. This did seem to help with the overall reliabilty of the network. Before I forced a reset it had been up for over 1500 hrs without a dropout.
Hope this helps

Probably broken.
If you are right next to it you won't have any problems with channels, unless you were using a cordless phone on 2.4GHz right next to it at the time.
My linksys piece of junk overheats and resets itself. opened it up and the a heatsink wasnot even stuck on to the chip.
And now you need to put it in debug mode, logon via telnet and setup the bridge correctly between the wired and wireless interfaces using the command line.

If your laptop is detecting other networks, it must be your router.
Sounds like it has died.
If you've reset it (insert a pencil into the reset button, then allow it chance to reboot, then switch off, then on again) and it still isn't detected by your laptop, then I suggest a trip to the shops in the sales is needed!
I had a D-Link DSL-G604T and guess what...it did exactly the same. I got about a year and a bit from it, then it died.
