Default Someone recommend a colour laser < £500

After numerous problems with the HP 2600 N colour laserjet, we sent it back.

We now want to avoid HP, and get another brand that can do postscript properly.

Can someone recommend a decent COLOUR laser printer ?

Depends on model and environment

Just read the PCW round-up of colour lasers and they recommend the Dell 3100cn

So I've got a recommendation on several printer brands. Normally i'd choose one and stick with it, like I did initially with HP, the we couldn't get our pdf stationery to print. Probably because postscript support is poor on th HP 2600n and implemented through the host driver.

So I guess what I need to do is take my pdf along to a computer shop like (gulp) PC World and try and print it in-shop.

Anyone else on the high street stock these printers you guys have mentioned ? Staples perhaps ?

We've got a Xerox colour laser (6100 I think) here, and haven't had any trouble with it.

Dell printers are rebadged Lexmarks.

I've been in corporate IT for 15 years and never seen a problem with HP, I think you just got unlucky. Their printers are generally some of the most reliable and robust available - it's what they are known for.

Doh!

Not wanting to highjack, but obviously the costs and lifespan of the mentoned bits (in addition to toner) can mount up. Especially when used for colour

For example the drum units on brothers don't have a fantastic life, although slightly cheaper to buy, can mount up when combined with toner cost. And manufactuers don't seem very forthcomming with the data of these wear and tear components (apart from toner).

I've only noticed as I'm also after a colour laser, although its been shelved until next year as more pressing matters have arisen.

Go for Xerox and go for a pagepack contract. Do you know how many pages you will be printing per month. This fixes your costs per page.

bloke in the shop said he'd had loads of HP 2600n printers returned by customers. He recommended the next one up in the range. Seems HP are cutting corners to get the printer down to £220 retail

I suppose you could say what do you expect for £220, but I'd reply and say I expected a printer that prints correctly instead of smudging. I'm not alone incidentally - lots of others on the net have same criticism on this model.

You really do pay for what you get ! Also some HP printers have had issues with the implementation of postscript.

Have a look at this.

Konica Minolta Magicolor 5450 from MacWarehouse

I had one on laon and was very impressed. Print quality was good and it was fairly quick. First page out time was a bit slow but once it was going it was cool. Just be aware the cheaper the printer the higher the running costs generally.

There is a cheaper model available too which I've not used.

We got 20 HP Laserjet 4600, and they have all been nothing but trouble, screwing paper up, not picking paper up etc.

On the other hand we have had hundreds of other Hp laserjet's over the years with very little trouble.

The Quality seems to have gone down hill over the past few years, we have plenty of Hp2100 Lasers still going strong from 2001, but their replacements (2200,2300, and 2400) have slowly got worse and worse.

Pretty much contradicting myself there
