Default increasing my network capacity

Ok , i have a SMC 5 port wireless router. i am running out of hardwired sockets on the back of the router. Can I put another 5 port or 8 port switch/hub into the mix and if so how would i hook up the hub to the router. at the minute I share my 10 meg connection with the router. how would i connect the hub, what cables go where?

cheers

sinky

provided it supports auto uplink, most routers if not all these days do.

connect switch to router should be technically via crossover cable but it shouldn't matter really

all the ports have auto sensing so i use one of the ports on the switch and connect it to one of the ports on the router. yes?

I'd wire half of the clients into your new switch, half into the old one, and have a single crossover cable going between the switch and wireless router.

if the switch is 1 gig, id connect all to the new switch and enjoy a 1GIG backbone

here is an example

Netgear switches are of poor quality and you'll never get decent throughput from one. Also you'll need gigabit NICs that actually support jumbo frames for it to be of any use. Waste of money at that level.

Auto-sensing is not the same as auto-uplink. Depending on how you set it up, you could be making things worse than they are now.

bit more than i wanted to spend really

i was looking at the netgear hub described above but if you guys think its crap then i wont bother. 2 of my 3 machine have gigabit nics but my 2x netgear storage centrals are only 10/100. my router is only 10/100, my xbox is only 10/100, my Dreambox is 10/100, my Relook 400 is 10/100. i want to be able to stream dvd and divx from the big rig to the xbox and to my wireless laptop. I would also like to be able to stream live broadcasts from my satellite boxes to the hard disk on my big machine.

should i stick with a 10/100 switch or should i go for a gigabit switch?
