Default Laptop HDD Data Recovery Recommendations ?

We have a Toshiba 2.5" laptop HDD that has bitten the dust and need the data recovered. Its going to be a take-apart-in-a-clean-room job, rather than a software solution.

Anyone got any recommendations ? I realise its not going to be cheap, but if anyone has used someone who charged a reasonable price I'd be interested to hear from you. Its not for business, so if there's someone that doesn't charge business type rates that would be good.

Thanks, have you used them before ? I've had quotes from many Googled companies.

duncan,
if you only want data files ie. pics, mp3s, word docs etc, you might want to try an external usb drive caddy.

simply hoik out the lappy drive, mount in the case an usb it to another pc as a portable device.

We used Data Recovery & Hard Disk Information Retrieval - DataClinic UK to recover a disk of ours that bit the dust. If you can wait for the data, its also cheaper than their express service. And true to their word a week later the disk and 20 cds turned up

£29.99 for an external caddy...ouch ...I can buy 3 for that money excluding my discount.

Also Let us know what happened to you hd ie. stopped spinning, clunking away etc.

Also do not bother opening the hard drive as if you do its bye bye data once the air gets in there m8.

Basically it just wouldn't boot one day. You can hear the head trying to move, but sounds like its stuck or the motors gone. Tried giving it a tap I certainly won't be opening it myself There's only a small amount of data to recover, its a 6Gb HDD and probably only about 2.5Gb used.

Thanks. I've tried OnTrack EasyRecovery Professional already, but I'm pretty sure its internal hardware failure. I'm going to try another piece of software that I've been recommended, but it doesn't look good. Think a call to DataClinic may be in order.

It depends how much the data is worth to you. . . .

In some circumstances £550 is a far cheaper option than losing the data!

It sounds like it's not too valuable . . . have you tried the freezer trick?

What about getting an identical HD and swapping the circuit board over on the back? (worth s shot, unlikely to work if it's not spinning up tho.)

Its not valuable to me, but it is to my GF Its her stock spreadsheets and a book she spent years writing. We have backups but they are a little out of date. Not £550 worth, but I've seen places around the £200 mark which is a little more sensible.

The board I'm guessing is fine as its recognised by the bios. I considered the freezer trick . . . anyone tried it with sucess ?
