Just takes lots of practice, if you play it enough you will notice some sort of pattern in the waves, best way once you hit around 100k is to circle anticlock wise around the edge of the screen (not too close to the edge tho). You generally get 4 black holes in the corners appearing quite often, just keep taking them out anti clockwise, if there's quite a lot building up behind you and you are struggling shoot the black hole once and let it suck em in then destroy it next time around.
As for the pink/blue/green & snake waves that appear surrounding you, shoot in one direction and head out of the swarm, they will then group together making it easy to pick off.
When you get snakes in the corners it will usually follow with some random pink or green ships, you will usually hit these if you concentrate on killing the snakes so take out the struggs first then hit the snakes when its clear.
Try to keep shooting forwards apart from the corner waves (black hole + 1 or 2 of each type of ship) usually easier to shoot these behind as you are moving from corner to corner.

I'm allways around the 100th spot. It's bugging because I'm a better racer than flat out lap time. Given a good run at a tournament I think I'd be quick.
