Default Vista wont install??

Tryed to upgrade to vista beta and half way through the instal the pc shut down and gave a "we shut down you pc as you could have a corupt harddrive or virus blah blah blah".

restart and it would do the same so had to select "run previous windows OS" in the start up and it came back with XP pro and a box saying "vista couldnt install, check the system requirements" yet my pc seems to be up to the spec suggested?

any reason why it fell over?

probably not enough of your system met the requirements.....

I tried to download the beta the other day - needed 15Gig of HD space

Check the specs

Yawn - it's a beta and because of that you have to expect it to be unstable. Just because you have relatively new hardware doesn't mean that the drivers have been written yet to support vista. I've installed it on a a couple of machines (and a vmware virual machine) with no problems at all, and it seems stable enough to me, so I'd guess it's a hardware / driver issue that you're hitting...

Yep whats the rush? Wait until its at least release candidate stage or a full release, I dont understand why people have to have it *now* unless you need to write software to take care of all the new avalon/SVG stuff.

no rush but if its half way stable why wait?

as it is i cant get passed the first step so have given up.....in contrast office 2007 works perfectly, if vista was on a par with that it would be fine.

Never use an OS that hasn't been out in the field for at least 3 years !

It is pretty stable if you run it on hardware that is compatible with the beta.

I suspect the raid controller is the one that killed it.

Lots of folks having issues upgrading. Try the full, clean install. Worked fine for my on an older system I have at home. XP3200, 1gb Ram, 9800Pro etc.

Oh, 1 other thing, make sure you burn the disc at 1x. I had issues with the 1st disc that I burned at 4x. Once I had made a new one at 1x all was well.

I actually think it runs quite well and have had no driver issues at all. Not too bad for a beta really.

Has to be said - got the Beta running on a few machines at work. Makes XP look like Win95

VERY OSX though

My colleague's running the 64Bit version - must ask him how he got on running Far Cry in 64Bit mode

Agreed though, Office 2007 looks v nice. IE7, well, it's about time it got dragged into this century. Works/looks nicer, but still not wholly convinced.

What did impress me was how fast it loads up.

IMHO, M$ are onto a winner Still not enough to draw me back from Mac, but with my Intel-based Mac, will deffo dedicate some space to a dual boot

Only by getting compatible drivers or disabling your raid controller. Of course it might not be that specific thing that's causeing it. Personally I'd wait for RC1 rather than go fiddling with the machine...

I'm with Ian on this one (For a change ). Seem to recall that something similar happened with the XP Beta. Back then MS made a stance that only certified MS drivers would be used.
Could be worth checking out the MS site for WHQL drivers for Vista. Also seconded on doing a fresh install rather than an upgrade. Upgrades can be very troublesome especially if you have 3rd party drivers installed for you're hardware.
