I've seen that once and i'm sure it was a dodgy avi movie, if its only happening when you open the avi folder try creating a new folder and moving the avi's one by one till maybe you find the dodgy one.

the grafix card is a nvida geforce fx 5500 128ram

The other way would be at the desktop (Where you may have a picture on it) right click then 'Properties' then click the settings tab.

Mike as far as crashes when playing them, im not too sure however they may be crashing when you open a folder because windows by default will try to load them all up into memory. This then kills your PC totally, there is a registry fix for this, taken from another website. Common problem with AVI files this
Avi files (divx) can be trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much better so it's possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll.
To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following
registry key.
Go into start menu, then into run and type regedit:
do a search for this key. Can be done with find on the top left of the registry window (i just serached for end number 87xxx and it found it)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D9 4-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}InProcServer32 (delete this)
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files.
As always newbie or not, if you FUBAR your registry its your own fault. This fix does work, I use it and have applied it to many XP machines. Now go ahead and fix this royal pain in the ***!

Click start then click run. Type: dxdiag and press return key.
If you don't then try downloading this from the Microsoft website.
If you do. Then who manufactures your Graphics card? I have heard that the actual card manufacturers drivers can be better than say the Nvidia ones.

Winfox or XFX or Leadtek or someone else. So with this in mind if you visit the manufacturer site they will have a NVidia driver designed specifically for the card you have.

The only other thing you could try is to use a lower dated driver from Nvidia. Or try the role back feature in XP to take you back to the last dated Graphics card driver.
