Default Need help with the virtual memory

Half the time my screen freezes and the only things I can click onto are 'start' and 'close'. The other times I lose all the pictures and just get the boxes with the little red squares in it. When either of these happen I get a warning on my pc telling me that my virtual memory is too low. I've looked in the manual etc, but can't find anything on it.

Can anyone help me - pleeease.

assuming windows xp

to get to virtual memory

right click on my computer

select properties

click the advanced tab on the top of the menu that comes up

top third of the menu is a performance tab, click settings in the performance part

then click advanced (the middle tab on the top of the menu)

Bottom of the menu should now be a virtual memory tab....click change

how much to set depends on how much memory you have, i usually set the max and min amounts to one and a half times as much memory as i have

to find out how much ram you have right my computer and select properties

also are you ok for hard drive space

Had a look through it and it says the minimum allowed is 2MB - recommended is 286MB - and I'm currently allocated 144MB.

Should I change this? If so, what to?

as above, although the general recommended minimum is 1.0x your system memory, and the maximum should be between 2.0 and 3.0x (up to a maximum of 4.0GB)
I think by default, windows will use 1.5x as a minimum and 3.0x as a maximum... so i would go with that.

right-click 'My Computer'
then click 'Properties'

and near the bottom right of that dialog it should say 'xxx MB of RAM'

in your Virtual Memory settings, set the minimum to 1.5x that
and the maximum to 3.0x that.

(make sure you have enough harddrive space and then some for the maximume!)
