Default Upgrade or start saving for a new PC?

Wondering if anyone can give there opinion on what to upgrade or whether to at all

Firstly this PC is a mates and he's sick of it being so slow and also wants to try a few games out like COD. The spec is as follows:
Packard Bell I MEDIA 5057
Intel Celeron 2.2GHz
256MB RAM
Columbia!? motherboard
He already has enough storage space with an external HD.

Now I've told him it's a waste of time really as everything will need upgraded and it'll be better to buy a new £500(ish) system. He however thinks there's hope left yet for the above and would prefer to upgrade (£££s).

Anyone that's experienced building/upgrading PC's tell me what they'd do? I was thinking new motherboard, CPU, at least another 512MB RAM and possibly new low-mid range GPU but as to what's good, most future proof and not expensive I don't know...

He doesn't need to be able to play COD2, Quake 4 etc on highest settings btw

Don't bother trying to upgrade, rip all that crap out!!! Waste of money IMO.

Here's my suggestion.....

PCI-E Mobo - AN8 Ultra - approx £90
Athlon 64 3000 Venice - approx £95
1gb Geil Value - approx £60
ATi X800GTO2 - approx £175
500W PSU - approx £50

All in - £470. Will play all current games at good framerates and will be upgradeable for a while to boot.

Also the X800GTO2 can be modded very easily to a X850XT PE, which is much faster

Although, if he really is tight then you could always stick in 512mb ram (approx £40) and assuming there is an AGP port, a NVidia 6800 card (approx £140).

Total - £180, but it's wasted money IMO as the full power of the GFX card would not be utilised by the Celly.

Two words, Packard & Bell-end. Would have been a Schneider when new. The present tight as a ducks **** rip your skin off case wont justify a new mobo or any other kit imo. So a new PC as that scrapper belongs in the museum of lame.

Agree with the "Packard" bit as I bought my first and last full PC from them, built my own ever since.

A bit harsh on his current spec there I think, as it can be used perfectly well ...........for.............erm...................w ell something anyway
