Have a look at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 for the AVG Free edition.
I have it installed on my old P3 700 laptop and it works a treat on a low spec machine like that!
Good luck

I use AVG and never really had a problem. Any Virus I have managed to pick up it's found.
I also run a housecall on-line scanner now and again.
And use it in conjunction with SpybotS&D, SpywareBlaster and Ad-Aware.

You can only know if it's picked up all your viruses if you run another checker on the machine, (otherwise how do you know what it's missed).
As I said, I've seen several machines with AVG installed recently which have been riddled with viruses. AVG did not pick them up, when I've installed the McAfee or Panda software, it's found loads of stuff that AVG had missed.
You get what you pay for...

I've also seen Norton and Mcafee miss things that others have picked up.
Then again, I'm not a computer novice so I'm carefull about things like that.

McAfee home user is about to step things up a gear, the 5000 engine - developed here in Aylesbury - will soon be intergrated. This includes full spyware detection, intrusion prevention, greater speed and of course our legendary repair capability.
I like NOD32 it's a great little product, the only thing I like about Sophos is that it's developed down the road, everything else is either one step behind - "We'll never add a repair capability" - or average at best.
