pc power....

What size psu will need to run my pc?? I am running amd 64 +1gb of ram and a nx6600gt. Also have pluged in a bluetooth dongle and webcam and wireless keyboard mod as well..
Every now and again the computer shuts down and fires up again but says there is not a problem... Could this be lack of power as the graphics card has its own feed from the psu????? The psu is only a 350w peak 400w.. What do you all think?? Its getting on my wick as i will be half way up normandy beach and zap.... back to the start.....

The main thing with power supplies is the stability and quality of the unit, dont EVER buy a cheap PSU.

They can melt motherboards and cause all sorts of probs, go for anything over a 400w by Antec, Enermax or Tagan

Could be all sorts of issues. Mine used to do this when I had it overclocked.

I'm currently running a PC that is more power hungry than yours using an Antec Phantom 350W PSU. Am not having any issues at all, looking at my current draw I'm rarely using more than 50% of the PSU's capability.

To be safe more than 400W is a good bet, and the brands that have been suggested to you are good (there are others). I stuck with 350W as I wanted a fanless (noiseless) PSU.

The case is only a cheap one.. but it looked good at the time.. The case with psu was only £39.. The graphics does have a direct feed from the psu and i was thinking if it could not handle it it might be shutting down on complicated games. The game which seems to affect it most is medal of honor pacific assult.. What do you think?

power supplies in cheap cases are crap. 350w is probably not even that. i am using a true 550w sustained for my rig with winnie 3200 o/c @2.64, twin 6600 ultras, 4x300GB sata, 1 x 120 ide, 2x dvd burner, network cards, and satellite tv card. heat tends to be a problem though so the side of my case is no off permanently

No kidding!!

Choice of case is paramount when you have a setup like that. You need one with really good airflow, but then I guess that you knew that already

im quite happy with my cheap 10 pound 500watt power supply from ebuyer
never had any problems.
to me its like a cheap tv, does the job without blowing up

as to whether the problem is the power supply, who knows.
could be anything
i used to get a lot of reboots due to the video card drivers with my nvidia 7800
using older drivers fixed it.

I used to be happy with my cheapo PSU too. That was until after about 1 year of service it decided to short out itself, the mobo, the graphics card and the memory

20% chance it could be the psu.
could be the ram.
could be anything really.

There are lots of different views on PSUs. I do not want to stand on somebody else's toes, but there is NO need for a 450W PSU.

I do not want to get too technical, but your PSU supplies different amounts of electricity on different rails. Different components use different power rails and draw different amounts of power from these rails.

Cheap power supplies often have very high power ratings on rails that you do not use. This useless power is added into their total power supply capability. They therefore claim that the unit is capable of 450W, whereas in reality the maximum useful draw may be as low as 250W. Therefore if you are using a cheap power supply you may well need a 450W or even higher model in order to meet your requirements.

It is also entirely possible for a high quality 350W MODERN PSU to meet your needs. As technology has moved forwards different processors and graphics cards have started to need their power from different rails within the PSU. New power supplies have taken this into account. They are able to supply more power at 12V which your machine needs. Correspondingly they have lower capabilities at 5V, which you do not need.

I am a member of www.silentpcreview.com. We specialise in making our computers as quiet as possible (the system I use is inaudible) One of the biggest things to consider when trying to achieve this is your PSU. There are many many factors to consider, but most of us end up with power supplies in the region of 350W to meet our needs.

There is a specific topic with in the PSU section of the forums that talks about how much stuff you can run from a 300W PSU. You will be amazed and what can be achieved.

I also have equipment to measure the draw of my machine. Mine is of a slightly lower spec than yours (only slightly) and I have never drawn more than 220W. Its amazing how it all works out at times.

The most important thing is to have a high quality power supply unit, not some big power cheapo unit.

To resolve your problem there are a few things.

1) Make sure that it is not overclocked. If it is, set things to standard and try again
2) Update your drivers
3) Take out half your ram, if it crashes again, run the machine on the other half of your ram. This way you have eliminated a memory issue
4) Try a clean install of XP
5) Borrow a different PSU from someone (a good one). Try your local computer shop if you do not have a friend with one.
6) There are other things to try, but those first few points should keep you busy!!

These issues are not easy to solve, but you are welcome to join our forums and post your problem. Please supply more details that you have already done so. Make and model of the PSU is needed for starters

I had this with a 6600GT and NF4 mobo - was the driver revs for GPU and NF4.
Resolved by using the latests ones off Nvidia's site (6.66 / 77.72) at the time.

Ps. my symptoms were when playing games it would reboot, not in Windows generally.

also make sure that you have installed the AGP chipset drivers before you install the graphics drivers. this could be a reason why your pc shuts down.

Playing farcry last night and the pc went t+ts up again and came up with a error has occured do you want to send a report to MS so i did and it came up with this link..

I have also noticed that with some high demand games, crashes can be caused by conflicts with other programs running in the background. To run a game on a clean system, do the following :

- Press CTRL-ALT and Delete and bring up Windows Task Manager.
- Click the 'Processes' tab.
- Click 'User Name' at the top to list all the entries by user.
- Select each process being run by the current user and click 'End Process' for each one with the exception of 'explorer.exe' and 'taskmgr.exe' - leave those running.
- DO NOT end any processes being run by LOCAL SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICE and SYSTEM

Try running the game after doing this and see if it crashes. It solved my BF2 crash problems
