Question How can I play a Windows 98 game on a XP PC?

This MUST be possible! Ive just got a game (Star Trak - Armada) for my PC which I loved playing at Uni but lost the disc so have found it again and snapped it up.

However its got a red cross against Windows XP on the back of the box. It has ticks against Windows 95 and 98.

Surely there must be a way of getting this going on my PC which runs XP??

Can someone explain how it can be done in very simple terms for a PC simpleton!!

Have you tried installing and running it yet? If so, what happens?

It will probably just crash under XP as it wasnt developed for it. You'll either get a crash to desktop, or it will lockup completely.

You could try right clicking > properties> compatibility on the exe, and changing the compatability mode to Windows 98 - it may work, but being a MS product, it probably won't!

D'oh - thought there may be a simple way of doing this. Thanks for the help though.

This is the simplest way to do it ! Did you miss this post or something, mike ?

- Find the .exe file that starts the game
- Right click on it, and select Properties from the menu
- Click the Compatibility tab
- Tick the box that says Run the Program in Compatibility Mode for:
- Select Windows 98 / ME from the drop down list underneath this checkbox

Have you simply tried running it normally? I have a proggie at work that was written for Windows 3.1 and it works just fine under XP pro. You biggest problem will be if the game uses DirectX and the backwards compatability isn't there. In that case compatability mode won't help you.

Ive tried the game and it everything works accept the speech in the game which is quite vital. The compatibility method does not fix this. Is there anything I can try?

Depends how it's accessing the sound device. Do you have to setup DMAs, IRQs, ports, etc.? If so, you'll probably find that most cards these days no longer operate on similar values.

Should have said earlier when I asked

You can download a program that performs software emulation of old soundcards like the 16-bit Soundblaster : click here to go to the download page for VDMSound
Also for other tips on running old DOS games in Win XP try this site
