I think she was worried that installing a full new version would wipe all the OE history......if she can wait till next weekend I'll probably ghost the PC then try the download as you suggest MJ......at least then I can restore it should the upgrade spoil the history!

Thanks for your reply.

Are you getting an error message explaining what DLL is missing. Open up the Recycle bin and see if there is a dll in there. right click on it and select restore. it should put it back in the correct location and then restart PC and try OE again

when you say history, you mean all the old messages?

what OS are you using?

do you know where the OE files are stored within windows?

do a file search for .dbx files , this is where the inbox etc, will be.

The error message says that DLL 005 is missing. Unfortunately her son emptied the waste bin so we can't take up your great idea.

Hi MJ. She has some old messages that contain important data. The OS is 98 SE. I have never used OE so don't know where the files are stored but will check at weekend when I return, I'll try the .dbx file search as you suggest. Many thanks for your help!

No Worries. Good Luck.
Else you can try reinstalling MSOFFICE and select custom install and just tick Outlook Express. Then only that App is installed.
