Knowing how insecure XP is ... what is the best product (from peoples experiance) for securing folders with XP ... would also like to expand it to external drives and usb keys

Anybody using anything at the moment.

Drives should be NTFS to enable built in security.
Decent firewall on your internet connection.
Enable user log on to pc....so that you have to log in with username/password
Beyond that use encryption software for data if you wish.
Disable file sharing.
Disable guest account.
or see here for pointers... http://labmice.techtarget.com/articl...ychecklist.htm

Certain versions of XP come with encryption, home edition does NOT. If you have a version that does...http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...c_fil_dszp.asp
Other encrytion software PGP.used by some corporate bods. http://www.pgp.com/products/desktop/personal/index.html
Cypherix...dunno but has a free dowload, evaluation i presume

If you use encryption make certain you BACKUP your encryption key. Learnt the hard way with that one

USB-Not sure about that but if you have external drives make sure they are not shared out, if they are remove the everyone account and add Administrator with full control and users with control you want them to have. Rename your administrator account, make sure the Guest account is disabled and run decent passwords, something with more than 8 letters with numbers and special characters (ie *,@, etc)

Take a look at Reflex Magnetics for securing external devices.
