Hi all

One of my laptop users laptop is running like a dog, basically there are literally thousands (69000+) so far .EXE files on her laptop and Im struggling to find what it is.

They are all very similar in name ie

gzbpn.exe
gzbrv.exe
gzbtd.exe


the list goes on and on and on through all letters of the alphabet


I will just try to delete them but would like a proper fix if anyone knows one.

They appear to be in c:\WINDOWS\system32

Give that a go.

restart your PC in safe mode and disconnect from the internet. That would immediately disable all bots and such. Disable system restore if Windows XP then run a good virus scanner through it, COMPLETE scan.

Restart in normal mode and see if it's gone. Run Windows Update and patch it like buggary, es[ecially all critical patches. If XP, turn on your firewall.

well I deleted 69000 rogue exe files in windows\system32

did it in safe mode as it wouldnt work in any other, this still hasnt sped it up so building her a new laptop right now groan

cheer up. we got a virus on our servers last year, it copied itself into every folder on the servers and created 69 different files in each folder.

our file and print servers had 243,000 copies of this virus. the virus software was up-to-date, we were just unlucky and got stung with a new virus
Took 2 weeks to rid all the computers in the office of it
