My 2800+ is currently at 53.5 C and the case is 54. No problems, and it's been running happily for 18 months or so (touches wood )

My AMD 2600+ is currently 45 degrees (MOBO is 23 degrees).

60 is ok but seems a little high. Are you using the stock Heatsink and Fan? Are you using any thermal paste?

Are you using the retail cooler? And is that under load? 23oC hotter than the inside of the case sounds a little on the high side. But you are in no danger of damaging the CPU itself - that's proof up to 90oC core temp, or about 75oC indicated from the motherboard (the thermistor in the socket sued to measure the temp under-reads by 10-15oC).

Its not the retail cooler but a 'better' one.

Its not under load - infact I have having difficultly loading XP - lots of blue screens.

Cheers.

it's too hot IMHO, my athlon xp 3200+ runs at 48/49 degrees even under load. I have a coolermaster fan with manual speed control though.

Sounds to me exactly what you'd get if the Heatsink wasn't seated properly. This would account for the heat too.

I agree - I think its too hot - it is sitting in the sun though.

According to bios the fans are going full tilt.

The only thing that could be raising the temp is the Dual Power Voltage Regulator daughter board - thats right next to the processor.

chump - heatsink definitely looks attached to me - I was careful not to screw up the white paste.

UPdate - just set bios to failsafe defaults and am now at second stage of windows XP load...

Ok next question - what RPM should I be getting from my CPU fan - it is 2600 rpm - looks a bit low.

WinXP installed now - intestingly the dual bios has swapped back to the F15 bios from the F19 I flashed.

wierd.

What are you using for thermal contact? Did the cooler have a thermal pad? If so, did you remember to take the plastic cover off it? If there was no pad, did you use paste? Which one? How much?

It's possible the cooler is hung up on the raised part of the socket and not making proper contact with the CPU die.

It is hot today, bare that in mind...

My PC just started beeping at me to warn me of the overheat. I opened the office window and 2 mins later all was well. Good ventilation and an exhaust fan in the PC tends to do the trick

case temps are too high.

Try running with the side of the case off.

If that gives a big improvement, cut a hole in the side of the case & mount a fan blowing air in.

If temps are still 53 or higher you need better cooling on your CPU.

FYI, I run an XP3000 @ 42 with case +/- 3 or 4 deg above ambient

Currently 58 CPU, 40 system.

I think the case is too small, I have one fan sucking air out but none pulling it in. Also the PSU isnt dual fan - this is probably a mistake.

I think I'll swap cases to the one I'm in now !

All a far cry from my trusty PIII 450!

Best combination of usefulness and quietness is a couple of slow-moving 120mm fans, but only a few cases take them.

I've got a Shuttle SN45 system, with an Athlon XP2500+ CPU. Was running about 51 degrees with my old Memorex CD writer installed. Now I've got a DVD writer (NEC 2500) and the temperature sits a few degrees higher at 54-55 with the same fan speeds. Ambient temp is a little hotter at the moment but I'm sure it's probably the new drive that's generating a bit of excess heat as well. These shuttles get reasonably hot, but never enough for me to have seen a problem or system crash. Currently 55 CPU, 52 Case. It seems high, (and it goes to 60 playing 3D games) but then again, why bother worrying if it aint broke...

Then again, the disparity between the two temps on your system seems quite marked, so perhaps reseat the CPU and heatsink, and check you havn't overdone things on the thermal paste (use, like the merest scraping of the stuff only). If you've got more than one fan, make sure they complement each other (eg. one for air in, and one for air out)

Also in small cases, not much room for circulation. You may notice as well that once you computer has been on for a couple of hours that the Hard Drive gets so hot you can barely touch it.

A couple of £2 fans from Ebuyer or abother case with several fans pre installed would sort it.

Most automated CPU fans would adjust RPM to suit temp.

at 2600 rpm that temp seems about right, so fan runing at 4000 rpm should drop to 45 deg and 6000 rpm into the thirties.

I've got another fan comming - I think basically case is too small and I need a dual fan PSU.

Last night ran for 4 hours at 56.

Now all I have to contend with are the BSOD now I have upgraded the NVIDIA sound drivers.

Anyone familiar with the crashing in kmixer.sys ?

Just thought I'd add my little story to this.

Athlon XP1900 (stock fan/sink) + MSI KM2M board with VIA chipset
Temperature figures (system 30degC):
CPU 58degC

Saw a bargain at Maplin(!), for an all copper heatsink + fan, speed controller, sensor, etc.. for £24.99

For good measure, switched the board to an ASUS A7N8X-VM with Nforce chipset

New figures (system 24degC):
CPU 26degC - this is with the cpu fan set to 2800rpm

out of interest, I monitored how low I could get the CPU temp by upping the fan to the max setting of 6,000rpm - the cpu temp went as low as 22degC!!

All figures are when CPU is at idle in windows
