Default Website For My Scooby, Opinions + Feedback Please

Just looking for some feedback from all you seasoned web browsers.

I stuck together a wee site for my Impreza. The backbone of which is a monthly diary showing the progress of my car since i bought it. I wanted to make it a little different from the norm but didn't want accessibility and ease-of-use to suffer because of this.

If you could have a browse around and report back with your findings i would really appreciate it.

Carls Scooby Site

Ta,
Carl

Default Wee Website For My Shed

Mods, there is already a similar thread in general here, i'd like the opinions of my countrymen please.

Guys, i've put together a wee site for my car over the past few days. Was hoping that you'd lend me 5 minutes of your time and have a wee look through and tell me what you think? I wanted to build something a little different from the norm but didn't want to compromise on accessibility etc...

Carls Scooby Site

It's basically just a monthly diary showing the progress of my car since Dec 2002.

Let me know what you think please dudes.

Carl, I like that a lot well done

Only found one problem. When you press "next" when on the Jun 04 article, it navigates to a page with no content.

Cheers

Site looks great Carl but for some reason, after I open your pics and I go to close them, all my I.E. browsers are shutting down.

Its never happened before and doesn't happen with any other sites, so it means I can't view your pics, unless I want to reload the website every time.

Or is it just me?

I loooooove your site! http://www.******.co.uk/scooby/diary_entry.php?id=20 - all the piccies are missing.

Would be nice if you had small pop-up windows for the photos when you click them - sized to the same size as the photo. I'm just being piccy I know. Overall, I love the clean feel and am totally in love with the smaller sites like yours. I just wouldn't be able to fit all my drivel in one.

Well done... it really is fantastic

Thumbs up

I see i have been moderated. Clever use of the merge facility btw - and i though i had you beat posting two threads...

Thank you all for your nice comments.

I'm aware of the problem when clicking 'Next' when on June. That's because i haven't put July's entry in yet. But then when i do it'll still be looking for Augusts entry if you know what i mean? Need to get jiggy with some PHP to make the 'Next' link disappear on the final entry.

Soulgirl, thanks. The piccies do open up in fresh windows which are sized exactly to the picture though? Which browser are you using? Dare i say it, have you tried clicking on the pics? I forgot to mention but i tested it on IE6 and Firebird 0.7 and it was fine for both functionality and appearance?

Talizman/John, again, thank you very much. I have a huntch as to how to fix your problem, please bear with me as i cannot replicate it on my setup and will need your help to test again if possible?

Doug, yeah, it's something like that, i have never measured it tbh. It came from Fancy Plates and has been on there for over a year now - not one tug yet (touch wood).

Spooks, javascript is on it's way for you bud - i just use Dreamweaver to stick it in for me though (messy as it is ).

Again, thanks for all your comments. I'm glad to hear it's fine to navigate as this was a major consideration of mine when i was building it. Please keep the thought's coming, spelling errors, don't like the green links (?) anything!

Spooks, this is how DW puts the code in. It could be simplified a whole lot more though.

This goes in between the head tags:

<script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
<!--
function MM_openBrWindow(theURL,winName,features) { //v2.0
window.open(theURL,winName,features);
}
//-->
</script>

This is the code i have for each image:

<a href="javascript:;" onClick="MM_openBrWindow('image.php?image=images/diary_images/<?php echo $row_diary['image']; ?>1.jpg','image','width=642,height=482')"><img src="images/diary_images/<?php echo $row_diary['image']; ?>1_thumb.jpg" alt="pic 1 - click for larger view - opens in new window" width="70" height="50" border="0" class="imageborderdark"></a>

The stuff in bold is the important bit for opening the image in a new window. Ignore the php - all that does it call the image 'code' dynamically from the database.

HTH mate, get me on MSN if you ever need a hand.

John, could you possibly try opening and closing one of the popups for me again please?

I'm sorry. I thought i had most bases covered browser-wise (waits for someone with Netscape 4 to post a screenshot).

Just reading on the Maxthon website (had never heard of it before ) and it says it's based on IE and anything that works on IE should work on that browser? Is there a checkbox checked somewhere to bust any popups?

I have already checked popups to arrive in a pre-determined size but it obviously donesnt work that way. I must say though, even based on IE and using their engine, I get less hassle and crashes from this browser. Plus you only have one indicator as you open all windows as tabs

You can generate that automatically within Dreamweaver. We have no determined how this website has been put together have we? If its via notepad... he is a hero

Hey up! I've downloaded Maxthon and am running it atm. Pop ups work for me though (inc the ones on my site) but it is rather nice isn't it?

Yeah, i mentioned that was how Dream Weaver puts the code in. Needless to say there's no secret as to how the site was built. I'd have been there all year with Notepad! DW isn't perfect though and i still had to get my hands dirty in places - not that it counts for feckall cos i still cheated.

I must have overdone the popup settings then I really like Maxthon, way better that MYIE2, which was its first born. That crashed every half hour. I will default my settings and see what I get. Doesnt detract from your site though... it's really cool.
