Angry NTL Boardband problems

Hi

Anyone else on NTL BB, experincing p!ss poor web browsing for the last couple of days?

Already looked on their status web page, nothing specific covering this problem.

Web pages either download as normal or "cannot find server".
Is it just me?
Anything I can do?

TIA

Buck

No problem here. Last time I had an issue the engineer was at the box outside my house within a couple of hours. Give them a call.

Mmm, NTL helpline 60/40. 60% chance of talking to numptie 40% chance of speaking to someone who knows, and cares, what they are talking about. This is of course after being on hold for 10 to 40 minutes.....

If its still not working properly by Monday I'll phone them then.

I've found their DNS sh!te lately.

However, instead of having it set to auto I have now hardcoded the primary and secondary dns servers into the DNS/TCP IP settings. You can find the IP's on their help pages.....

What page on NTL help shows DNS IP's? (Taken 10mins get this page up!)

What DNS IP's are you using?

Found the DNS settings on NTL's help pages.

Same numbers are already hardcoded in my tcpip settings.

Changed DNS settings to non-NTL servers, marked improvement, but still seems a bit flakey...

Hmmmm not sure then mate, its been fine since I hardcoded the dns, must be something else - unfortunately you might have to log a fault with them

Mines working fine at the moment but week or so ago i had problems for about 2 days, kept getting page cannot be displayed and i had to keep refreshing till it would eventually come up, my sister lives not far from me also on NTL BB and had same prob so just put it down to usual faults.

All seems ok again now though (touch wood)

NTL are currently upgrading the broadband speeds to 1.5meg & 750k

So if you currently get 1meg you'll get 1.5meg and if you get 600k you'll be upgraded to 750k all for free.

This is probably the reason for any problems, and this is not stated on there website.

Supposedly August the 1st is the change but looking unlikely seeing as they still need to upgrade all of the STB for the people on 1meg

also depends on your area - they have different servers handling different areas. as has been mentioned you can manually set the dns - also have you tried the obvious and rebooted your pc and STB at the same time?

I`m on ntl not broadband though, and was kept being redirected to one of their pages telling me that my PC has a virus and i had to download the stinger antivirus to solve this. Did mention broadband users were infected aswell.

They may have been updated recently but it's what I use for the time being. It will update automatically via your web browser (ie only) and will speed up your browsing particualarly if your connection is a bit bogged down

I've been on ntl for over 3 years and 99% they are 24/7 1meg max, if you're connection is running slow its nothing to do with any settings, go out and buy some software, it makes no difference, just remember, format now and then thats free and it makes a hell of a difference. The net doesnt go any faster if u change your settings (i get paid a lot of money for IT support btw)
its all psychological, clear your history and you'll be surprised.

And all Proxy's do is give u a transparent IP addy, for dodgy downloading, they dont improve your speeds

Rant over

I disagree... it does make a difference. If you have x amount of users on proxie A and a smaller quota on B of course it will make a difference. Perhaps you are paid too much? Even NTL will ask you to enter a new proxie when you phone and complain, if things are that bad!

Er whats a proxie ?

And yes I am paid too much because everything since XP / 2000 server fixes its self to a degree, there are a million and 1 broadband accelerators but unless you can measure to 1 millionth of a second then nothing makes any difference FACT.

There are many many factors that can slow the surfing down including as mentioned spyware, but i think the biggest factor here is if anyone bothered to read it is NTL's continued upgrade, They are improving the service and yes it will affect us while they do it, but does a few weeks of reduced service really warrent a complaint seeing as we are soon to get 1.5meg for the same price.
