Overseas calls made from the p.c. on its own!
Any help please ,my friends p.c. has dialed sao tome 00239 281 485.. Total cost £70.
I have searched for any installed dialers found none, Did a general search for the no found it in user settings and also an html doc with it in and other numbers..
It is running an active and uptodate copy of norton.
Any ideas..I can delete the html doc and the user settings but want to make sure that it wont happen again.
also i have done some searches on the net but found nothing..

Do a google search for Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware and CWShredder. They're all free and should sort your problem and find any more nasties lurking on your 'puter

Norton what? If it's just the AV then no it won't stop this kind of thing. If it's Internet Security then maybe. My PC has AV and a software firewall and sits behind a hardware firewall and this kind of crap still gets through. Adaware gets some of the things that S&D misses and vice versa. CWShredder seems to get some other things including web dialers

It's a common misconception that AV will protect you from things like this. As your mate has found out it can be an expensive error! You really need some kind of active guard running in the background in addition to AV and a firewall (which are esstential). Have a look at Spy Sweeper - well worth £20 of anyone's money.
You can download a free copy with the latest updates file, but you won't be able to download later updates unless you subscribe. Spy Sweeper will pick up things missed by Adaware and Spy Bot (both excellent products BTW). They also offer a free spyware audit to check your machine. Even if you don't want to download Spy Sweeper, I would recommend that you do the audit after cleaning your mates PC to make sure it is totally clean.

We - McAfee - take them seriously, more detections are added weekly and our generic driver is doing a grand job. Not 100% but doing a good job and getting better.

Antivirus software is usless IF you don't regually update it. I use Mcafee at home and it notifies me almost every day that there are new virus protection files to download Some of the antivirus software packages that I have used require you to search for updates.
If you don't download the latest protection files then you might as well uninstall it
Alos, Windows updates need to be reagually checked.
