Why wont XP recognise my usb scanner
Visioneer 4400
Downloaded the driver vis4400.exe but when I go through adding hardware I click on 'have disk' then select d:\vis4400.exe
The file extension defaul is *.inf - if I amend this to .exe it does find it but wont allow me to select it (ie click on 'open')
What can I do to rectify this?

Sounds the like driver is compressed. Double click the file via Explorer and see what happens. It might prompt for a location to unpack to (which will then give you a .inf file) or it might just install the drivers for you.

Hardware info has to be in .inf (AND the correct format). The Inf is a simple text file, so you binary (.exe) won't work.
Have you tried running the .exe program. It'll either run it's own install routine or will extract the drivers to a folder. You would then point the hardware install to look in that folder.
