Origo ASR8400 router and Apple Macs
Firstly, a BIG thanks to Ian - your help last night was invaluable!!! Spent the next two hours playing Tony Hawks Underground wit =h my mate!!
However, maybe a MAcguru question here, so here goes.....
Using router with Xbox and PC running XP Pro (via Ethernet)
I've got a Mac Powerbook 5300 running OS8.6 (Old but I want to resurrect it for Internet surfing)
and a G4 running OSX 10.2
Both Macs have network capabilities, but as I'm a networking virgin(!) I don't know how to set the mac/s up to access the broadband connection in the router.
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
Dan

Not sure about the 8.2 machine. But so long as you have the G4 plugged into the router and set to connect via "built in ethernet" on the Network menu in System preferences it should just sniff out the connection and work automatically.
Is your XP machine set to share connection? If so it should be as easy as thay.

sorry, the email response isn't working
Am I correct to assume that even though the router has the Broadband connection, I still have to set XP to sahre the internet connection?
I can't see how though, as effectively the PC, XBox and both Macs are accessing the internet through the router at the same time....
Any suggestions?

ScoobyDoo555,
Firstly, is the router set up for DHCP, I assume so as the Xbox is picking it up. If its not set to DHCP, you'll need to know the IP details of the router to be able to configure the 2 macs.
Who is your broadband provider ? Is it cable (ie NTL) or ADSL (ie BT)
Cheers.

Hi Mark,
Ian helped me last night to set up the router, so that I've got access to the net from both PC & XBox.
We set up a static IP for the PC I guess - I'm pretty sure none of it's set to DHCP...
The router IP details are as follows -
IP address - 10.0.0.2
Subnetmask - 255.255.255.0
MAC address - 00:09:F3:04:66:A3

From the info you gave I will have a stab at a manual setup. I'm not sure whether this will work but you have an almost identical setup to me so its worth a try
Go to system preferences (one the G4) Select Network, then select the built in ethernet option. At the bottom you will see a configure button. Click that.
In there if Built in ethernet is selected you should have a TCP/IP tab.
Click that and change your ip address in there to 10.0.0.7 (only use a number on the last one that isn't already in use by your Xbox or PeeCee.
Set your Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0
Set the router as: 10.0.0.2
*this may be under gateway in jaguar I can't remember
You might need to add your DNS servers also. you should be able to access these through the user panel on your router.
The way to test whether its this that is causing you to lose a connection is this:
open a browser and type in 216.239.37.99
This should bring up Google.com if it does its the Mac not seeing your DNS (I had this problem) To fix it, get your DNS addresses and put them in the box labelled DNS Servers.
If it doesn't work then I'm sure one of the cleverer Mac people will be able to help.
