X-Box: Avalaunch
After using EvolutionX for quite some time I've always been a little wary of trying out new dashboard replacements for the X-Box. Now Avalaunch has been around for a while and had loads of fixes, I decided to bite the bullet and see what it was like . . . . glad I did
Some superb built in features like a file manager, no need for boXplorer. You can update to newer versions online directto your X-Box and also download skins or save games direct
Try it, you might just like it Don't think I'll be going back to EvolutionX.

Get the Chip from www.baldbouncer.co.uk - I got the Xecuter 2.3 (solder one). Installed in 10/15 mins tops.
Whilst you're waiting for it to be delivered - read all the guides on www.xbox-scene.com.
Initial software setup can be daunting but is made simpler by the "Slayers" install disk - though if you do enought reading to do it without your understanding of what's going on will be far better.
I dont do XBox live (I'm ISDN only) but you need Internet Access shared to the Xbox via it LAN connection. So that could be your PC (with DSL modem) sharing it via ICS or a proper DSL/Cable router sharing it for your whole LAN.

Hi Dunk,
A few Qs...
1) how stable is it? Had any bootup problems?
2) have you set it to keep EvolutionX as well?
3) Was it easy to setup/install. I've read a few pages about it
4) can you still run all your old apps(dvd player)/games/game managers from it?
5) where can I get it? (pm/mail offline if you wish)...

EvoX works so well, I'm not sure I would dare risk another dashboard!

In my opinion they've all got there good and bad points, for me EvoX plays all games from box but is slow to ftp off of box to pc, AvaLaunch however runs sweet both ways but won't play certain games Fifa 04 and dino crisis it hangs part way through game, they all run most things you can use XBMP and XBMC as your dash if you use it more for video and music anyway

Si - Interesting that you mention problems booting Fifa 2004. I had problems too, although they were not attributed to Avalaunch or even EvolutionX, but it was the Xecutor2 4981 bios that caused a problem for me. I went back to an old bios and it worked fine. Keep meaning to mention it to the X2 team.
Even with the original disk it just froze on the start screen, went to EvoXM7 and worked a treat again.
What do you think ?

2) Yes, I still have EvolutionX in the root of my C drive. I just copied the new files into the C drive (none clash with EvoX) and amended my bios to boot Avalaunch before EvolutionX.
3) Easy to setup. Just edit the config.xml file, instructions are detailed within the xml file to help
4) Everything works perfectly The games menus look so much nicer with the spinning cube thing, skins are sooo easy to load, DVD player works fine. Not tried HDD Loader, but then I always used to use boXplorer. No need now as its got its own built in file manager.
5) #xbins
The only thing that wouldn't work was that I couldn't FTP to my X-Box using My Network Places on XP like I used to. Just use FlashFXP instead.

Oh yeah, and there's a news ticker to give you all the latest news from X-Box Scene etc too
One click updating is cool too. It goes online, checks for updates and installs them if necessary . . . cool

Dunk, What server is #xbins on?
Do you still have the Matrix chip? What BIOS are you using on it? I've very tried to edit it before. I'll have to read up on that. I assume if it goes wrong I could just re-program via the programmer...

I did need a bios update for dino crisis on EvoX but not sure on Fifa as i'd already done it before i bought it i've not been on xbox for a while and i've got a feeling my current dash is either Unleash or NexGen, but like yourself i have multi dashes on box drive so i flip between ***** nilly
I'll boot box up in a mo AvaLaunch probably has a few updates and they may resolve those issues, with regards to your network places have you tried creating a new one, i lost mine one day recreated one and it worked fine

Anyway, I have EvoX M7 at the mo, but will probably go back to a previous X2 bios when I get time.

avalaunch
hi all,
been using avalaunch for a while now,its had a few problems but most of them sorted now.Just a bit of advice if your updating using the online update make sure you back up your xml file as its gets over ridden by the new update.
Another great feature is you can set up avalaunch to connect to XBINS and download to Z partition as well as streaming shoutcast pls files on boot to dash.
if you want to boot to evox on start up by holding right trigger, add the following in your xml filemaking sure your evoxdash.xbe is renamed to evox.xbe and <path> is set to what partition your evox.xbe is in:
To enable launching of the last launched XBE when you hold
the left trigger while booting Avalaunch, set this setting
to 1. Otherwise, set it to 0.
-->
<enablelastrun>
1
</enablelastrun>
<righttrigger enabled="1">
<path>
g:
</path>
<filename>
evox.xbe
</filename>
</righttrigger>

Nimbus - I use XBTool to edit mine. You can edit boot sequence, led colour, remove boot animation etc with ease
Jye - Me too I used a solderless chip, PoP to install, but if you don't fancy it, drop me a mail and I can sort it all for you.

Nimbus if that scares you modify the xbe names so evoxdash is avadash and avadash is evoxdash, obviously you'd need to edit that configs for dash menu's if you launch various ones within evox,ava,nexgen, etc

There are a couple of bits missing from Avalaunch tho that I miss, namely a bios flashing option and an NTSC/PAL selector (handy for 007: Everything Or Nothing ). Not a problem as I've installed Enigmahs Video Mode selector and XFlash, but you'd think they'd be in there ? Or have I drunk too much Stella and can't see them ?
