Slow time windows XP

Anyone out there can advise me as to why all my internet sites are REALLY slow loading at the moment, please.
Some half load a page, then seem to pause for ever before continuing.
I've done disc clean-up, and de-frag, but am unsure what else to do?
Also, how do you check the internet connection speed on XP? I'm on NTL 600kB broadband.
Any instructions in idiot speak, please, as I'm NOT computer literate

NTL broadband has been a bit slow lately (seems to be better now tho')
I guess you'll be on the same exchange/server (?) as me (from Lincoln)
search for Netpersec on google for a good little application for checking broadband speed as you surf
