Anyone had experience of switching domestic ADSL supplier ?
I'm currently with Freeserve (512k) but have served my one year contract and would like to move to a 1Mb supplier with as little hassle and downtime as possible.
I'm happy with the Freeserve service but they don't offer a 1Mb service
How easy is it to close one service and start another with little or no disruption to service ? I'm leaning towards Pipex for my new supplier, but open to suggestions from others experiences

I too am with Freeserve and am moving ISPs to get a 1mb connection. Many ISPs allow migration, which basically means that the switch to your new ISP is handled between the two companies without you ever losing broadband service (I think you need a TPUK number, which you should be able to get from your ISP).
Unfortunately, Freeserve do not allow migration (or so I was told when I phoned up). Looks as though I will in effect have to cancel my Freeserve account, use dialup for a couple of weeks while Freeserve release the line and then start up again with my new ISP :-( :-(
Only when you are a customer of the new ISP (PlusNet in my case), will they be able to assess if you can get a 1mb connection...

Bulldog meant to be quite good. Have you checked out ADSL Guide to compare them? I'm on Pipex and they've just started doing 1Mb connections (I'm only on the 512 service though - with no complaints)

When I checked the forums a couple of months ago, there seemed to be quite a bit of negative feedback on Bulldog. Plusnet and Pipex seemed to consistently come out well for the ISPs that offer 1mb connections.
The other thing to say on migrations is that it can apparently take up to 8 weeks. I've been waiting 8 weeks now, and still haven't switched over (must give them a chase...).

Cheers Matt. Bulldog seem to have a good support presence on that forum.
Just read this:
When you have decided that you want to move your ADSL service over to another ISP you will need to contact your current provider and inform them of your intent to migrate. There are four things that you must confirm with them:
What your unique customer number is. It is actually called the CBUK number and would look like " CBUK87654321 ".
The BT Product currently used to provide your connectivity. Most residential users have ADSL accounts based on the "BT IPStream Home 500", It is vital that you confirm this as you can not migrate to an ADSL account that is based on a different BT product.
Make sure that your current service provider does not cancel your account at this stage otherwise your migration will fail and you will be left with no ADSL until you sign-up from scratch!
We advise that you confirm with your current provider what your commitments are regarding your account with them. A successful migration requires your current provider's acknowledgement, if you are still within an agreed contract period you may have to settle your account before they will allow you to migrate.

Just found this useful document on the Plus Net page too. Looks like downtime could be as little as 30 mins
Problem looks like my BT product won't match
