D-Link DSL-504 inbound ftp
#1
Hi,
Has anyone managed to configure a D-Link DSL-504 to accept inbound ftp and forward it on to an internal address?
I have done it numerous times with other firewalls, but cannot for the life of me get it to work on this bloody D-Link!
Step by step from someone who has got it to work would be much appreciated!!
Regards,
Christian

Dunno if it'll be the same as my Dlink DI-624 but for some bizarre reason I can't see my own ftp from any pc's on my home network, but for other people outside it's fine. This may be the prob, get someone else to check it from another pc.

Did you put all of your connection details back in okay ? Don't want to state the obvious, IIRC but mine didn't keep settings when the firmware was upgraded, so I dumped them to a file and reloaded on completion.
Edit: Doh ! Beat me to it

Dunk - that's because the router doesn't route internal packets the same way as external ones. I got around this by having an internal DNS server which gives private IP addresses for things like www.mysite.com, but forwards other queries like www.yahoo.com to my ISP

all sorted now.
Have to use the internal ip for accessing the www or ftp server now with the latest firmware. Annnoying how cant use external name (used to be able to with other firewall i used) oh well.
just read some more documentation, and apparantly this is the only way of doing it. i.e. if you are internal, you need to use the internal ip address.

It is annoying. I'd go as far to say it's a load of crap.
I have multiple sites sharing an IP address so I couldn't just use the IP internally. You can get around it by having an internal DNS server, but it's not exactly trivial. There may be a lightweight DNS server out there that could help but I don't know of any. Alternatively, you could always add the machines to your windows\drivers\etc\hosts file
