Need some more help configuring my ADSL router please
I now have an internet connection through it, but now want to do a couple of extra things.
1) Set up an FTP server. I have the some FTP server software setup but I think that the router is blocking the port or something
A mate tried to connect but got a message about not having access to the folder. How do I find out exactly what IP address I need to distribute ? I think I may have the wrong one. The Router has one address and the PC another, then the one allocated by my ISP is another
2) Allow Direct Connect access to port 412 for UDP traffic.
I am currently using Passive mode which is not ideal.
The router is a D-Link DSL-504, but I think they all use the same software.
New to all this, please be gentle. Thanks

I've got a Dlink DSL504 Router. As far as the outside world is concerned, your router should be invisible. People should be able to access via you PC IP address (i.e not the 192.168 one).
Have you got the router firewall/filter enabled? It will block all unrequested connections (even if you haven't set any rules up). Try disabling it.
Haven't tried setting up an FTP server yet, so that's all I can offer.

Dunk,
Hmmm not sure about that, Chris.
I've done the same thing with my Speed Touch ADSL router, so your DLink will probably be similar.
(The following assumes you have a single (possible non-static) IP address allocated to you by your ISP)
Your router will have an "external" IP address (i.e. that allocated to your ADSL connection. It will also have an "internal" address an your LAN.
Your FTP server will also have an 'internal' address.
Your FTP server is not 'visible' to the outside world, as they only see your router. (This gives you some protection from nasty port scanners). However, for people to connect to your FTP server, they need to connect to your PC on your LAN.
To allow this, you need to set up Port Translation on your router.
You will need to tell your router to forward ports 20 and 21 to the IP address of the machine you are running your FTP server software on. I'm guessing there's some kind of GUI configuration page for your router - it'll be on there somewhere.
Note: If there is a "Default Server" setting DO NOT SET THIS TO ANYTHING! (This will make ALL ports be forwarded to the Default Server - this is a BAD THING!)
Your mate should then be able to connect to your FTP site via your IP address (which may change periodically).
Mail me off line if you want to talk about it more.

Only forward ports (e.g. FTP) you are 100% sure you need and then make sure the box they are forwarded to is itself protected in terms of appropriate security and patches.
