My Deskstar "Deathstar" is living up to its name and developing regular errors, all have been fixable so far.

Can I "Ghost" to a different size hard drive?

What is the cheapest solution to this? Any free utilities to do the same?

Thanks, I've just finished running that and it has found bad blocks.

Think I would be better with a new hard drive.

cant remember what's the ibm warranty is, but i had a maxtor and on using their hdd testing software, it reported it as "faulty" and advise that i return it back to maxtor. from the serial number, it was able to determine it was under warranty.

btw, if your motherboard and hdd support S.M.A.R.T, turn that on.

Use the DD command in Linux. This has been the most accurate way for me (both at home, and work)

There is now a firmware upgrade that can stop these drives dieing.
Only took them three years to sort it out..

I havent tried it, cos i wouldnt trust any of my data on any ibm hard drives after i bought 4 deathstars and they all died (click of death)

I had a Deskstar, and it died a little over 2 years after buying it. Went to www.hgst.com/harddrive (they have transferred their disk stuff to Hitachi) and put in the serial and part number and was pleasantly surprised to find it was still under warranty! Requested an RMA and promptly received a brand new drive to replace it!
