i only thought routers were reallsy useful for sharing an internet connection between multiple computers
thats why i didnt bother with a router
also firewalls downt really interest me
in my opinion just stick with the modem you have. its not as if its slower or anything
just to add:
my friend has been trying to setup a temporary network at home with his router.
nothing but a ballache and we cant manage it, even though he does a computer science degree

A router is going to give you big advantages if you have more than one PC as then you can just network them all into the router and they should all see each other, where there are shared directories, and the internet.
Most routers are easy to configure and getting your network up and running should be simple. You will probably, at the most basic level, only have to enter your username and password for your connection. Most contain a DHCP server which, basically, gives your PC an address and also provides it with information about your internet connection so that it just appears to work by magic.
In general a router will also have a hardware firewall which is something well worth having, even on a home DSL connection you'd be surprised at the number of attacks you see in a day. It may also allow you to establish VPN connections so your PC can become part of someone else's network, or theirs part of your network.
Even if you only have one PC you might consider a router just because it is a handy solution that presents on a normal network cable, gives you a firewall and that will allow for expansion.
I have a friend who uses one of the 4 port DABs value routers and he thinks it is great. As far as I can see it's only disadvantage is that it doesn't act as a VPN endpoint, something I personally use a lot, but it costs about £45. Needless to say don't buy a single port router, they aren't much less expensive and limit your upgrade path.
