Talking

The final bits to my new rig turn up today. The main components are as follows:

P4 3.2
MSI NEO M\B
OCX PC4000 Paired Ram
Nvidia 5900 Ultra

Now all I need is for Half-Life 2 to come out and warm it all up!!

Are you going to up the FSB to 250Mhz to make use of that nice ram?

Your P4 could then run at 4Ghz!

Could be fun?

You will be very very lucky to get 250fsb from a 3.2 without exotic cooling.

Just wondered why get the PC4000 ram that's all.

My 2.4c is now running nicely at 250fsb/3Ghz with air cooling.

I got the PC4000 ram so I could do this. Luckily, it worked.

I'll up it eventually. I do need some extra cooling though. That will have to wait until next month.

2.4's and 2.6's can do it nicely most of the time. The higher multipliers especially of the 3.0 and 3.2 hinder them without ubercooling.

I put it all together last night. All seems fine but I am not 100% sure on the best way to configure the Bios. The MB is the MSI 875P NEO-LSR. It supports everything I have and more. What is the best combination of multiplier speed and proc mhz to make the processor run at 3.2?

I currently have it set at 16x multiplier on 200mHZ = 3.2ghz. Is there a better way?

well, unless you have been given an extremely rare version of an Intel 3.2 ES, the multiplier is actually locked on the chip.

ok, the first power on showed the multiplier at 8x. with the proc running at 1.6ghz. I just upped the setting in the bios to 16.

Hmmm, more likely a misreport and in actual fact it booted her on 16x100mhz fsb. Intel have multiplier locked their chips fully since back in the PentiumII days.

Only Engineering Sample chips and even then only select ones of those have unlocked multipliers. Some partial unlocks, some full unlocks. Also, be warned that a hell of a lot of the ES chips are early production silicon, so do not OC well in a lot of cases compared to the production silicon.

Cheers,

Nick

Half Life 2 will cripple your GFX card though m8. 30 fps at 10X7 compared to 60 for the 9800. I dont trust Nvidia cards anymore.

I saw that too, not too worried at the moment. Believe it or not, I didn't just get this machine to play Half-Life 2, now badly written in my opinion I am sure Nvidia will address the issue with a driver change.

I am always scepticle with new games that have a sponsor from a graphics card company. Nvidia is the major sponsor for Doom3, it will be interesting to see how ATI cards do with that game!

Why release a "benchmarking" util prior to the release of a game? Looks like a good marketing ploy to me, or am I just bitter?
