Hi all,

someone has leant me some cd roms, they are dvd rips of the "best motoring" series and Im dieing to see them!

Anwyay, they dont seem to want to play(pc just hangs up etc) and when I try and copy the .dat file(which you can use in windows media player to watch it like an mpg) it gets half way through the copy and then comes up with an error something like "cyclic redundancy error. If its of any use, the cds that these are on are cheap unbranded discs. To **** me off even more, my mate i borrowed them off has watched them all on his crappy pentium 400 pc, with low spec, yet my all singing all dancing 2ghz beast just cant cope!

Any ideas highly appreciated. (there could be a full scooby video dvd rip in it for the one who sorts this!)

Use a different drive to read it. Some are more picky than others, some seem to correct the errors fine etc.....

If that fails, go to your friends house and watch them or copy them off him.

If they are on cds, and have the .dat extension, they are more than likely mpeg2 files, converted to svcd format.

You will indeed have trouble copying these files from cd to your hard drive, as there is video compression used in the digital stream, which makes it hard to read as a data track.

The easiest way I have found is to extract the .dat using ISO buster, which you can download for free.
This will extract the file to your drive as if you had copied it, generally then they play ok.

You may also need an mpeg2 player/codec like Elecard, or nimo codec pack.

Good luck

Steve

have you tried putting divxpro 5 this might also ehlp if its the wrong file type, or have you not just considered the cd might be damaged and thats why it hangs

If there .dat files they are mpegs, so Divxpro will not help.

I dont believe the cd was damaged as his friend watched it ok - as he stated...

You could also try copying the file to HDD using ISOBuster from Smart Projects.

Unhappy

Hi All,

Ok so last night I fitted a nice Pioneer DVD drive and a 128mb Radeon graphics card.(rest of pc is top spec).

Thought that would at least allow me to play these VCDs from the drive but no, they did the same hung up, crashed every player I tried. At one point I got one of the disks working through quick vcd player, but it was only the one disk.

Using the copying prog lan man suggested Im affraid to say also didnt work, but it did pick up that there were bad sectors?

So Im begining to think that the disks(which are unbranded) are just flawed - I have had troubles with unbranded disks when copying myself in the past.

Next step is to get mpeg2 decoder, after that I will try bringing them into work or copying the disk.

Really frustrating, I keep getting small glimpses of some great video footage too!

cheers

Andy
